I drained my own oil at 1000km, but left the filter in. Then I did the proper change oil/filter at the next interval. I had the filter wrench from NAPA, filter from toyota, and oil from walmart. It was very simple, following the instructs on the oil filter box. Everything was reachable from the front of the car, didn't even have to use ramps.
Oil filters can only do so much effective to their rating up to their particulate saturation point. Any larger 'chips' found on the filter media are not in your engine. That's a good thing. Your filter is going to catch anything large that may be harmful and cause accelerated wear. Changing your oil too much is a waste. I agree with changing the oil at the 1000km/1000mile interval the first time but then you can stretch it out to factory supported intervals of 8000kms/5000miles after that. All the other particles that get past the filter continue to flow around your engine internals. As time passes more of these particulates accumulate in parts per million (ppm). As the ppm count grows, so does the engine wear. That's why I have never been a proponent of longer oil change intervals regardless of type of oil used. Only low micron bypass oil filters can combat this accumulation, and only to a point. Using a full synthetic oil to 15000 miles leaves more ppm of wear metals in the engine than a conventional oil has at 5000 miles.
