I drained my own oil at 1000km, but left the filter in. Then I did the proper change oil/filter at the next interval. I had the filter wrench from NAPA, filter from toyota, and oil from walmart. It was very simple, following the instructs on the oil filter box. Everything was reachable from the front of the car, didn't even have to use ramps.

Oil filters can only do so much effective to their rating up to their particulate saturation point. Any larger 'chips' found on the filter media are not in your engine. That's a good thing. Your filter is going to catch anything large that may be harmful and cause accelerated wear. Changing your oil too much is a waste. I agree with changing the oil at the 1000km/1000mile interval the first time but then you can stretch it out to factory supported intervals of 8000kms/5000miles after that. All the other particles that get past the filter continue to flow around your engine internals. As time passes more of these particulates accumulate in parts per million (ppm). As the ppm count grows, so does the engine wear. That's why I have never been a proponent of longer oil change intervals regardless of type of oil used. Only low micron bypass oil filters can combat this accumulation, and only to a point. Using a full synthetic oil to 15000 miles leaves more ppm of wear metals in the engine than a conventional oil has at 5000 miles.

Canada Are the new filters cheaper than the old spin on type?

Since the filters seem to be the same on the inside, less the metal housing they should be cheaper than the conventional style of oil filter. Do you have to go under the car to get at the filter or can you get at it form on top of the engine compartment? I guess there is not skid plate orany other obstuctions to remove as you need to do on the tundra.

The filter is on the bottom of the engine on the back side. It's a little bit of a stretch for me to reach it from the front of the car. It sits too low to the ground to go up the ramps I have, so I just reach for it.

I did mine yesterday, drove up on rhino ramps my driveway slopes down so it's perfect. Don't forget there is a reset procedure for the oil maintenance reminder, it's in the owners manual (I think US only).

Canada How much time does it take to change the oil?

On my current Honda Civic DX-G it takes me about 25 minutes to jack the ar up and change the oil. The Corolla will be here in a few weeks. How long does it take to change the oil on the 2009 Corolla with the cartridge oil filter? Can you do it by just Jacking up the car and taking off a tire? Do you see any advantage to this new style cartidge filter. What is the cost of the filter vs the old style spin on type? ( I pay about $5 for a spin on )

Yeah, you'd think the cartridges would be cheaper than a standard spin on but they are not, at least not up here in Canada from the dealer ($9). I usually buy Baldwin filters for $5-6. It is a very new filter so it isn't everywhere yet. Next time I will check out NAPA to see if they can beat it.

There is a jack point right at the front of the car look for a bump with a tow loop. You can see most of the components from the front on the ground. You don't have to take off your tire either. First time will take probably 20-25 mins as you are probably paranoid of the new process like I was. The second time will probably take as long as it takes for the oil to drain, seriously its pretty easy. Correct, no oil change reminder for Canadians.
