Actual XRS/Camry/2.4 MT MPG

What kind of fuel economy are you seeing with your '09 Corolla XRS or Camry with the 5-speed manual?

I don't think I'll change my mind about the Corolla S with a stick, but since the deal I had on the S went away, I could be tempted with an XRS if I thought I could see 35 MPG out of it on the highway. I do a lot of my driving on 55-65 MPH rural highways. I like to put my foot in it off the line now and then for fun, but probably wouldn't do that enough to torpedo the fuel economy.

Just curious. Thanks.

Haven't done the math but I just reached the fuel light on my first tank of gas in the XRS.

457km on a full tank of gas. I guess you could say that's about 10L / 100km. Not sure what that figures out in MPG.

Depending on how I'm driving, I've averaged about 9.6L/100km for one tank and my last tank was about 10.5L/100km, lol.

All city so far.

I have an 08 Camry with the 2.4 and a 5 speed. I am consistently getting between 32 and 35, with the 35 coming from the last two tanks. It has 5000 miles on it now, so I am sure break-in has something to do with it. It will probably get better over time. I drive in the same conditions as you almost every day.

just got the car yesterday (xrs 5 speed), with a full tank of gas. the range according to the trip computer is less than 300 mi! i hope that isn't true...on my 12 year RAV4 (barely), I can get over 300 mi easily for the most part before I have to fill up.

Your 12 year old RAV4 probably has 55 litres in the tank and the 2.0 litre engine with 125hp, not 50 litres and 2.4 litre with 158hp.

Plus it's the initial run. Let us know what it says after a few tanks!!

Whoa!! I'm hoping I'll get that figure too...

I just finished my 1st tank of gas and it was 10.3L/100Km...Gonna be doing a lot of highway driving from now on as I am starting my new job.

Do you guys have any idea how many liters are left in the gas tank when the low fuel light comes on (permanently on, not on and off as you take corners or go up/down hill...) Not that I intend to be running on fumes most of the time, but I usually find it useful to know how much it might last as a last resort It looks like the 2.4 is going to be a little more costly on the fuel side compared to my current ride, but I still want my XRS dammit

Toyota usually makes the light come on when there's 10 litres left.

Is that for Corollas? My Camry has the light come on around 4-4.5 Gal /15-17 L.

My Camry has the same 2.4L engine with 5 speed manual but with longer final drive ratio. I can get about 34.5 MPG or 6.8L/100km on a highway trip. I did 36 MPG or 6.5L/100km once and only once but I don't know how I managed that. Worst I've done was 25 MPG 9.4L/100km.

My guess is that your Corollas should be able to perform similarly since your car weighs 500lbs less. But at the same time, you have a shorter final driving meaning the engine revs higher at any given speed.

This is what I was guessing about the 2.4 in the Corolla... any benefit of being in a smaller car was killed by a shorter final drive. That suits the purpose of the vehicle -- a sport trim. If you want economy, you stay away from the XRS in the first place.

That's for Toyota cars in general.

I checked that against a 1998 RAV4, 2000 Corolla and 2002 Camry and they all lit up with 10 litres left (cause we pumped a full tank at the pump stopped ~ at the tank size - 10 litres. So that's 45 litres for the RAV, 40 litres for the Corolla and 60 litres for the Camry)
