quirky MPG display?

Hey guys my MPG readout on the multi-function display is very quirky...if im driving smooth on the highway it shows 99.9, then the next second it drops to like 76 (i wish i was getting 99.9 and 76 MPG), then the moment i let go of the gas it shows like 16 lol anybody else experience that?

shouldn't it be the other way around?? If you let go, it'll show 99.9mpg for a while.

There's usually a couple of seconds delay. It's a fun meter to watch, however, it isn't very accurate. I rely on my trusty calculator: miles driven/gallons pumped in = actual mpg.

Haha, yeah I've noticed that on my LE. While driving on the highway the gauge will say on average around 36mpg, but if I take my foot off the gas it instantly jumps to 99.9 mpg. Meh I just rely on total mpg gauge, as well a good old calculator.

99.9 is accurate (sort of -- it's the highest the display can show). You are not using and fuel when you have your foot off the gas. It's basically showing infinite MPG, which is what you are getting. On mine it lists 0.0L/100km, which means the same thing.

I've noticed screwy things if the A/C is on. I'm guessing it's because the load on the engine will vary as the compressor kicks on and off regardless of what you're doing to the throttle.

Mine does that too (Canadian car). Do you have any feel for how accurate the mileage computer is? This morning mine was pretty volatile when hills of any sort were involved but on a level road at 100 KPH (60 MPH) it seemed to steady out at around 5.7 litres per 100km (41 miles per U.S. gallon). Is this reasonably close to what I'm actually getting? This was at 5th gear, manual transmission, 1.8L engine, cruise control. I've only had the car a couple of days so haven't had a chance to actually measure anything.

From what I've checked in my XRS 2.4L it seems pretty accurate. I need to do an exact test one of these days to see for sure.
