06 Corolla vs 09 Corolla gas mileage

My new 09 S is getting exactly what they said I would get, 27 miles to the gallon. My wife's 06 Corolla S does better and gets 31 miles to the gallon. 90% of our driving is city or rural driving. Very little highway miles. I did the calculations by subracting the miles from one fill to another and dividing by the gallons used to fill up at each stop. The 06 is by far better. Anyone have any reason as to why? How are all these people getting better gas milage than me? I don't drive the car hard.

Where does it say that you will only get 27 miles per gallon? The worst mileage for the S in the brochure that I have projects 31 mpg for city-only driving and 35 mpg for combined city/highway and that's about what I do actually get. Are you sure that the tank was filled to the top when you started out?

The 09 is about 140 lbs heavier with 6 more HP, so maybe that makes a difference.

Also, you have to realize that even between 2 identical 2006 Corollas, there will be a slight difference in MPG, like many here have stated.

This makes sense.

If 90% of your driving is city... 27 mpg is excellent. I think you'll still see 31 or better on highway runs. I'm able to eek out 30 mpg in the xB even though it was only rated at 28 on the highway. All city is another story.

mmm, i agree with the OP. it still doesnt make sense.if the official mileage says that the WORSE possible (city driving) is 31 mpg, then why would one get 27mpg. i'd say that's not a "slight" difference.i'm personally getting better than 27mpg, getting 30mpg for the overall mileage. but i'm still extremely disappointed, because i drive 40% highway and 60% city. and not to brag, but i'm a very light driver, the ones who let off the gas if i see a yellow/red light 800m ahead.

The MPG ratings are not absolutes, they are an average rating based on the testing. Each vehicle will be a little difeerent. The biggest difference will be the driver. My Camry is rated at 19/28 under the new ratings. I never get 19MPG and I can easily get 30MPG on the higway. I usually average 27MPG with a 70% highway 30% city mix of driving.

Our "S" is rated 27 mpg city & 35 mpg hiway, and by the indash "computer" it's doing close to 30 city and 36-37 hiway with an auto trans and 3000 miles on the vehicle. I also use unleaded gas, no ethannol.

How many miles on it? I mean, when I bought my 04 corolla it took about 6k miles before i get the best mpg i could. If they are right, the improved technology is supposed to compensate for the heavier weight and slight increasement in horsepower. Once the car is broken-in, I think it should get as good or even slightly better fuel economy than the 06 model.

Maybe its because you drive with a heavier foot on the pedal than your wife does? Also your car has 18 hp more than your wife's does. Try asking your wife to drive your car and maybe the mileage will get better.

I'm glad to hear that. Unlike the OP my commute is more like 90-95% highway and I'm currently getting between 42.75 and 45.75 MPG. I'd love to think that will bump up once I get to 5 or 6k. Currently have a little under 1K on the odometer.

key things to remember(And just a summary of whats aready been said):

You said it's new: it won't get the best MPG until it is broken in, could be between 5-10 K miles before you see your best

Everyone has a different driving style

which ways do you both drive? If your terrarin corverage is more hilly, that would easily explain it

My wife just put the second tank of gas in her new 09 S Auto, and it got 35, with 80% highway, and a good bit of idling at the dealer when I picked it up. When its broken in I expect to see 36 or 37.

Here's a reference point. My 09 XLE has just over 1K miles on it. I also own a 99 that I've had since new. My 99 averages about 33-35mpg around town and 42-44mpg on the highway, always has for 125K miles. My 09 averages 33-36mpg around town and 42-48mpg on the highway. I've repeated a 120-mile trip on the highway four times so far with my 09. Best highway mileage with it so far is 50mpg (one way, 60 miles traveled, doing ~55mph), worst is 42 (one way in opposite direction, doing ~70mph, 60 miles traveled).

Disclaimer: I'm light on the gas pedal and brake and don't use the A/C much.

27mpg (town/rural) for your 09 S doesn't seem unreasonable if you use the A/C often, accelerate from dead stops quickly, and/or live in a hilly area.
