Hard Clanking Start after a few days parked.

Hey everyone. I'm having a bad start to the day. The 09 'rolla has been sitting in the garage for the last few days, we've been away on a camping trip with the beater van, and the first start was LOUD clanking\pinging with a small puff of black smoke before going the standard exhaust fumes.

Called the dealership\service and they asked me to monitor. I feel better having it on record ad checked out and so booked a service appointment after the weekend. god knows what, if any, consequences that had to the engine.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Er.... may I ask about your habits switching on and turning off the engine?

Are you, by any chance, pushing the accelerator and rev the engine, then shut off the engine while it is still revving?

Are you, by any chance, pushing the accelerator when you start the engine?

You should not do either of them.

Any modifications like CAI? or any mod. of the exhaust?

I'm not assuming or suggesting anything, btw. so please don't get aggravated, I'll try to go by elimination of possible causes.

cheers,

Try not to let it worry you. You're doing the right thing by havin it checked. They'll scan it and let u know if there's a problem. That's what a warranty is for and I'm sure there's no long term consequences on the engine. I took mine in on the weekend for a few issues and surprise they said there was nothing wrong with it, so I'm accepting it and moving on.

What you heard is valve and gear chatter. Oil is drained from cylinder head after sitting for the few days.
Once started and oil is pumped to it, it quiets down and everythings normal.
Common on a high mileage engine. Very unusual for a new one.

Thanks everyone. sorry I disappeared there. Had a rough few days, death in the family, and this was just another worry.

The car had been sitting the garage a few days while we were camping. I've baby'd this thing so far, so the answer to all the high reving, shutdown, etc. is no, no, no. wonder how i can help them tell for internal issues.

The oil drainage scenario did come to my mind too, but a new car doing this already? It's been running okay since, looks like gas mileage hit the dirt a bit since all of this though.

you milage dropping can definatly be a symptom of something being wrong. i would put a little more pressure on the dealer to inspect further.

Dealer visit today, everything checked out okay. A health check and a detailed diagnostic check, printouts given to me, all show okay. no abnormal temps, fuel, oil sensors, no misfires, nothing.

Technician "thinks" that either the air intake or exhaust stayed open on the last shutdown before we went away. And thai either some air flow causing dryness and evaporation, or some moisture caused unusually hard start.

Sorry as i am new to this, how do i follow up with Toyota Canada to escalate?

I'm hoping they don't, but if they do, they've already said to return and they can follow up with Toyota Canada. It never ceases to amaze me why they don't do this the first time. I do understand the whole new model year, not a whole lot of complaints taken seriously enough by them to warrant bulletins or even matches in the database yet. It's just the frustration level, that the event did happen and there is not way to prove it or outcome to what's happened. It's always "it just happened once" comment.

maybe toyota canada really needs a bad media publication for them to wake up and step up to the plate.

I agree. I wish now I wouldn't have bought a first year model. I thought Toyota was immune to this crap, but I thought wrong. I have some issues too that were passed off and I know these things are gonna turn worse, just have a feeling. Don't laugh but should've bought the Ford Focus, great little car now, very reliable, rides better, more power and well priced. Oh well, as long as I've learned something from this it's not a total loss, lol.
