either 5w30, 10w30, or 5w20.

you wont have problems running the slightly lighter viscosity 20 weight. slightly better fuel economy maybe 1% at best but either or would work just fine.

The reason Toyota went to 0w20/5w20 is for C(orporate) A(verage) F(uel) E(conomy), or CAFE as did many other North American car companies. If a car company gets their overall fuel economy spread across the entire fleet lets say in North America, they can make certain claims, for marketing etc. Toyota came out with a TSB March 29,2006 saying that it was now the oil of choice for toyota vehicles, so is 5w30 no longer valid for the past 20+ years? Engines suffer prematurely from neglect rather than the wrong weight of oil.

Do some reasearch on Bob is The Oil Guy and you will find a whole world of deviants who live and breathe oil. Only then can you make an informed decision.

If you really want to maximize fuel economy, whatever oil you use in whatever vehicle, use the 0wXX version(0w20,0w30,0w40). The most gas efficient engine warms up quickly and the 0wXX will get you there faster than its equivalent 5wXX,10wXX,15wXX). Nearly all wear occurs at startup, and 0wXX will help you there as well.

This is very true. You'll find some real nuts there and along with them.. some really good information. You can read about oil for days.

Actually, Canadian Toyota dealers use 5w30 for ALL cars, I've tried getting them to put 10w30 on my car and they look at me like WTF! then they tell me.. yeah we can do it but it's gonna cost you like $10 more because we have to use bottled oil, blah blah blah

All cars? Even those that have the 5w20 designation on the oil cap like the 09 Corolla? I haven't been in for a change as my car is still well under the 6K km.

yes and no. It's a bit depending on the dealership. Our last time we went to the Toyota dealer, they put 5W20 into everything, including our Gen. 8.
One barrel fits all, that's the point.

As to the question in Houston, you may want to look at Amsoil's 0W40 for
best heat viscosity while the 0W is good for the cold startup.

cheers,
joachim
