Gas Prices and Corollas AGAIN! (Long)

Well, I think it's time to discuss the reason(s) we bought Corollas with gas on the move again!

1) There are those that bought the XRS model to add some HP, suspension mods, etc to give the Corolla a more "sporty feel" look, etc.

Now that that group has been represented, I for one can remember almost exactly 1 year ago when gas was selling for over $4 USD! Like many I panicked (sort of) and sold my 2007 Hyundai Sante Fe AWD with hardly any miles on it, figuring that gas was going to go higher and stay there!.

As timing would have it, gas almost immediately took a sharp turn south and you could hardly give it away!!! Then came the Markets bust etc, etc.
=======================================

Well, here we are, about 1 year later, and gas is really on the move once again. It is approaching $3 per gal and seems to go up daily...... 'deja vu'.

I bought my 2009 Corolla XLE last June (it was the last Corolla on the lot, during the "shortage" of 4 cyl cars; or I would have gone for a lower trim level!) and like many had never owned an economy car in my life (I have owned MANY cars too). A car had finally taken its rightful place in society ...Something that gets you from here to there and back! (IMHO)

My 1st reaction was " Damn, my timing sucks....Gas Stayed low for most of last winter too. NOW the worm has turned once again, and Gas is just plain outa sight with no end in sight. I, for one, am quite happy that I did not get "sucked" into the "bear auto market rally" and resisted the beginnings of wanting something bigger again!

Thus comes the 2009 Corolla and its "clone" 2010. Despite a lot of groaning and griping about the car on this forum, I for one am happy to own it.

Granted, mine has been trouble free (except for the ECU reflash for oil consumption). Mileage is constant at about 24.5 city and 36 hwy (figured the old fashioned way). There are lots of hwy stretched that are basically flat and the car's computer says 43 mpg! I HAVE A PRETTY GOOD MEMORY, and remember the pain at the pump, which seems determined to stage a comeback.

(POSITIVE rant over) It sure feels good at the pump as the little bugger struggles to "fill up" its measely 12-13 gal gas tank.

Must be the mean streak in me, as I watch the Hummer/SUV crowd whip out those hundred dollar bills at the pump once again!

Interesting Rant...

But I know I don't regret buying the XRS model... A few less MPG doesn't bother me. It is still better than driving a V6 or V8 that chugs gas.

I actually got into an argument with a Hummer (H2) owner last week at a gas station. Long story short, He doesn't like Jap Cars, nor does he like it when Jap Car owners purposly say aloud: "Sweet, only cost me $35 to fill up my tank" and then ask the H2 driver how much it cost him to fill up.

LOL, that's too funny. I love the 1/2 the fill up price and double the gas millage over my Jeep TJ. Driving on the highway is the best when I'm pretty much getting almost tripple the millage compared to my TJ.

how typical. hummers are one of the least environmental friendly cars. cant stand em, and usually the driver/owner too for their arrogant ways.

i loved it when i lived closer to my work, a full tank of gas ($34) would last me 8-9 round-trips to work (450ish kms). now that ive moved and the increase in gas prices, i drive about 550kms/week and i feel one tank of gas ($39) a week is still rather awesome.

That's really funny...Doesn't like "Jap" cars....I wonder how he feels with his "Chinese" Hummer!

I still think something's broken when the pump shuts off at $20 with my Rolla! (soon to be $30 and on and on we go)

Conditioned reflex from all those years behind the wheel of an SUV!

Seriously...Is a Japanese car really Japanese? I think not. The engineering may be, but with a global economy, there really is no such thing as an American car, Japanese car....Etc, Etc. If I remember, my 2007 Korean Hyundai Sante Fe was made in Alabama, USA! Nice new robotic plant too!

I think the only REAL car-country association was a YUGO! LOL

I bought my '09 about a month ago and haven't checked my mileage yet. Tomorrow I'm leaving on my first trip-- NC to Mobile,AL and then down to Ft Myers, FL and back home. I plan on checking the mileage for the first couple of tanks since those will be both state and Interstate driving. My old 2000 Corolla always got me between 32 and 35, and hopefully this LE will get me better. Anyway, I know it will be better than the truck.

We not only save money when prices are sky-high, but we save money all the time by using the right vehicle for the right job.
