A/C air intake warning

We were on a trip so I put one of those small plastic grocery bags in the glove box for use as a junk bag. Next thing I know the air conditioning stopped cooling. Turns out the air inlet for the A/C is right over the glove box and it sucked the plastic bag out of the glove box and onto the air inlet stoping air flow. The dealer was nice and fixed it as a freebe since I was a good customer. He said it happens quite frequently. So don't put any plastic bags or paper hankerchiefs loose in the glove box anymore. Prettty weird thing isn't it?

Could this be where the cold infiltration is happening in winter conditions when the fan is set to zero?

it's probably the air intake for the a/c when it is set to the recirculate position that the OP is talking about, they are usually just below glove box... i suppose cold air could leak into the cabin through there if it is not closing properly when not in use..

Interesting, a similar thing happened in my wifes CRV.

I'm guessing the AC air filter prevented the bag from hitting the fan though, and when not in recirculate I think it pulls air from under the windshield cowling. Still it could happen to anyone

I believe the upper glove box is enclosed on top and the lower is open on top, so I believe it was the lower glove box you have to be careful with. Also I usually run the A/C on fresh air, but it was about 98 degrees out and I might have had it on recirculate - makes sense. I never would have thought about this if it didn't happen to me. I think Toyota ought to put a notice in the operator's manual at least. The repair probably would have cost over a hundred dollars and if it happened to you, you would think it was an A/C problem and probably not look into the A/C inlet to clear it yourself. As I recall we were really hot and the A/C wouldn't work in any combination of A/C settiings including fresh air.

Same thing happened to me. I heard a flapping noise when the fan was on that was getting louder and faster as the fan sped up. Brought it to the dealer under warranty expecting that the fan motor would have to be replaced. Instead, they found a Kleenex by the fan that was sucked in from the lower glove box that was making the flapping noise. No damage. Just don't leave any loose Kleenex or napkins in there. Weird...
