Here in Quebec, we are obliged to have winter tires on from November 15th to April 15th, so everyone in quebec with cars with TPWS will have to spend an additional $400 with tax if they want that light off in the dash.

If you put the winter tires on the existing rims, you'er OK, but if you want 4 additional rims to do the job yourself, you'll have to pay or live with that light on 5 months a year.

Since it costs 50 bucks to install and 50 to remove the winter tires every year, many buy 4 additional rims to save money and change the tires themselves, like me.

The clerc at Toyota told me that if my car is equipped with this TPWS, It has to be operational even with 4 winter tires. It's the law he said.

I want the extra set of rims so I can save my alloys. Salt and snow can really put a beating on them. Changine them myself and saving a few bucks is definetly a bonus.

2009 Corolla TMPs

My understanding from reviewing the subject:
1. There is no legal requirement in Canada for TMPS. In fact the base Corolla does not have TPMS. In the US the law mandates car have the system but apparently they is no law to require keeping it operational.
2. If you can't live with the light on (mask it with tape or a card on the dash) you need to move the sensors to the other rims. It isn't as bad as it sounds but you need a mechanic to do it. You don't have to remove the tire, just break the bead and remove the sensor. This eliminates the need to re-balance the tires. If you go to the expense of buying additional sensors you will have to have the computer re-programmed every time you change tires.
3. I have written to Toyota Canada and talked to the local service manager and apparently they have no way to turn this light off. Even if there was a way there would be the service charge (approx $50).
4. At some point I imagine someone will figure out which wire to switch or ground to turm the light off.

Cheers

It's how I felt too and and I was not willing to pay the extra$ every 6 months for a stupid light. It doesn't look like they bother all that much for the smaller markets outside the US when they design their cars. We still cannot fit our loonies an toonies on the coin tray because they are built specifically for the US quarters (Love the Corollas by the way, this is my fifth...!)

Anyway, I took care of the problem by taking the odometer out and unsoldered one side of the LED that's used for the Tire pressure monitoring system. You have to be very carefull but this is perfectly feasable if your are bit technical.

I even managed to kill the Safefy belt alarm by putting a 1.5 Kohms resistor in parallel with the two wires leaving the belt latch.

After paying over $180.00 to have my TPMS switched to my summer wheels, and then back I'm irkittated by this "new" method they are using as opposed to the one they used on the 9thgen. As I understand it the sensing was done through the ABS system by detecting a variance in wheel rotation.
While I'm sure it wasn't as accurate, it was effective and didn't incur additional cost to the consumer.

Dooky!
