correct me if i am wrong but without the tires mounted on the front i could feel and see that there are 2 bolts holding onto the front caliper brakes. just in case i want to remove those front calipers from being mounted, is it ok to remove those 2 bolts and not damage or alter the brakes and its function? i wanna remove them so that i can paint them neatly. i am worried i might alter or damage the caliper functionality in case i remove those 2 bolts.
oh man doing small things on the 09 corolla without the repair manual is really a challenge.
The calipers are of the same design as the 9th gen's brakes which are a similar design to the other toyotas.
If you're going to paint the calipers, you will need to remove those bolts and the brake line connection. If you havent done anything like it before, I'd recommend against doing it on your own since they are sort of important when stopping the car.
Aren't your front calipers cadmium plated? That silver colour?
If you do not disconnet the brake line the caliper can only swing out and not totally removed. Be very care though you'll have to bleed the line if you disconnet it. Also '09's have ABS and EBD. 08's don't.
yes the front calipers have that silver color. bleeding the brake line to install back the brake calipers is one thing i want to avoid. ill find out if i can paint them by just swinging out the brake calipers. thanks.
If you dont' fully remove the caliper while painting, you have to take extra care that overspray doesn't hit your pads or your rotors. Even if its just a little bit that you can't see could compromise your braking ability later on.
As for the calipers being cadmium plated, it means that any paint that will stick to them will require quite a significant amount of spraying, so I really don't see how you're going to be able to do it with the calipers still mounted.
I used the brush on red tremclad paint. That way I didn't need to remove the calipers. I painted the calipers on my xrs nearly three months ago and they still look great. The tremclad has a deeper red than most caliper paint and costs less. As far as durability goes, I painted one of my cars calipers and it still looked good 5 years later when I sold it.
