Sounds like bad hubs. Put the front end on jack stands and grab the front tire with one hand at 12 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock and wiggle it perpendicular to the plane of the tire.....it should not move. If it does, your hub is bad.

What steering gear are you talking about? The worm gear inside the box? Or are you referring to the steering shaft? If it is the shaft, one of the joints might be worn out.
