With reference from Jeff, the DRL uses the inner bulb (9005/HB3, which is also the high beam) at half the voltage. When you switch on full headlight (not including the high beam), the outter bulb comes on (HB4/9006).
So if you are gonna install HID, there's no need to disable the DRL...I will be getting my XRS tomorrow and can take some photos if you needed.

It should go without a saying you should take an overload of pictures!
Nice work Eric. How tough was the conversion to HID? Where did you mount the hardware balast under the hood? Any pictures of that - esp. for those of us who look under the hood and wonder how to squeeze anything more under the hood.
So I'm new to this site and I recently upgraded from a '92 4Runner to an 09 Corolla LE with all options about 2 weeks ago. I'm looking into adding HIDs but alas I'm not a technical guy, and I've never modified a vehicle. What's a reasonable kit for a reasonable price (around $200)? And is it all that difficult to install them? I'm only looking towards replacing my low beams for now. Any info would be awesome and much appreciated.
Hey just got back from Washington DC and it was an awesome trip; lots to see there. Anyway, I have a lot to catch up, heh.
I haven't put in the HIDs yet but am looking to have them installed this Tuesday. I will post another set of photos later on...
@Chris: HID conversion kits are readily available today and are very cheap too. I say 95% of the kits you buy off eBay are made from China...My friend is using a cheap made in China HID kit for the fog light and it has been working well in the past 2 years...HID kits nowadays should come with a thin ballast and a separate igniter. So do inquire the seller before you place your order.
For the installation I have always asked my friend to do it for me. I'm not very familiar with electrical stuff...but it's not a challenging procedure. It takes anywhere from 20 to 35 minutes.
Sweet, thanks eric. I have a buddy with an 04 subaru wrx that hes modified to over 300 hp and he put in a kit from a company called McColloch 10000k HIDs... he recommends 8000k but even then I'm looking at $300... but if HID's are as reliable as you say then I think I'll go with a $200 range... I can probably talk my buddy into installing them or at least helping me.
Ah McCulloch HID...I saw a seller selling them on eBay and it's expensive too. Personally I don't know if it's worth the extra money to get those expensive kits. As for the color temperature, brightness decreases as you choose a higher color temperature (e.g. a 4300K HID bulb will have more light output than a 10,000K HID bulb). But I know it's cool to have blue light...
