I just took delivery of a Magnetic Grey S today. Couldn't be more happy, been waiting almost forever for it. That aside, I have a few questions for other 10th gen owners.
1. DRL's, Mines is a Canadian car, so DRL's are mandatory. However, I was under the impression that the DRL's were turning on the highbeams at low power. Mines, just have the low-beams on 24/7. Its exactly like my previous 9thgen, kinda peeves me. Could there possibly be a dealer flash or something that could rectify this?
2. The steering wheel control lights. Mines seem incredibly dim compared to all the other interior lights. Is that the case with everyone else as well?
I live in Vancouver BC and my DRLs are the highbeams on low voltage. I dont see why it would be different in another part of Canada but maybe your lumination sensor is malfunctioning. Unless its programmed to be that way. I'd ask the dealership about that.
Yeah, the lights on my XRS' steering wheel are pretty dim. I figured it was supposed to be that way to prevent it from becoming a large distraction.
Hmm. I'll have to investigate this further then. I took delivery at 7pm last evening, so the sun was still up. Where is the light sensor?
To Tideland, naw, I wasn't driving in Vancouver yesterday. Dealer told me this is the second Magnetic Grey S in Vancouver, I'll take it with a grain of salt, but I guess theres only physical proof of 2 thus far, so far so good!

well I haven't seen a 3rd so his statement is true for now.. although it'll probably change by tomorrow lol.
It doesn't have automatic headlights so is there a need for a light sensor? Or is it for the Optitron gauges and so it can tell when to dim?

There is a light sensor. It's in the car's manual. If you look on top of your dashboard where the windshield and your dash meet... there's this long strip... sorta like a vent for the dehumidifier for the windshield... there are two holes and both ends of the strip... one is sorta like covered with a knob and one is just a flat circle. The one with the knob is the light sensor for your guages and headlight.
The new Corolla has automatic headlights, that's what the light sensor is for.
Jeff
Are you sure? I didn't see "AUTO" on the headlight stalk for the Corolla S. I know cause I fiddled with it and had the headlights on during the test drive and my Corolla S had the dome.

It shouldn't say AUTO like the others. There should be a little hollow circle, the symbol for the sidemarkers and the symbol for the lowbeams.
As long as you're on the hollow circle, it'll be automatic. Should turn on your lights if it gets dark for a minute? Some little time period like that. Try it, turn your car on, cover the dome without touching it for a minute or so, and wait.

Yeah, I'm sure . 2000km of never having to turn on my headlights sure, haha! There is no "auto" position per se. Well actually there is, what there isn't, is an off position. At night, there's no way I can turn my headlights off, the "off" position is auto. Next is running lights, and the final is headlights.

At night the headlight switch does nothing, lol.

To both of you:
whoa.. that's trippy. Cause you know from other Toyota vehicles, there's a separate AUTO position that's one more click after full headlights right?
Zenith, I don't have a Corolla, I just test drove one but I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm at the showroom. If it's auto, that's fantastic!! I'm kinda spoiled with automatic headlights (Although I do turn on the taillights if necessary.. .like this morning when it was raining and visibility was poor).
Jeff: interesting... so even if you turn to the "-" (sidemarker) position, it doesn't turn off the headlights and run on the DRLs + side/parking/taillights?

I can confirm Jeff's comment re: the light switch does nothing @ night time, though you can still turn on/off your fog light, heh.
interesting indeed... well at least no one can drive around at night with DRLs only cause they're inattentive and don't notice the dimmed lights or no "taillight on" icon cause the Optitron gauges are illuminated
