This doesn't include a couple dozen motorcycles and used cars. Hence, I've had pretty good exposure to what makes/models have problems (at least for the short term, since I rarely keep cars more than a year or so).

Here's the cars I purchased new that I can remember:
1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 - multiple problems
1985 Nissan Pickup - No problems
1986 Honda Accord LX - No problems
1986 Honda Accord LXi - No problems
1989 Ford Taurus SHO - multiple problems
1989 Toyota Pickup - multiple problems
1992 Honda Civic VX - no problems
1992 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo - many problems
1992 Dodge Grand Caravan SE - 1 problem several times
1994 Honda Accord EX - no problems
1999 Ford E250 - multiple problems - only vehicle to ever leave me stranded
1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 - 1 minor TSB
2000 Ford Lightning - multiple problems
2001 Buick Regal GS - no problems
2003 Ford E350 - 1 minor radio problem
2004 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 - no problems
2005 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 - multiple problems
2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L - no problems
2006 Pontial GTO - no problems (my favorite car of all so far)
2006 Dodge Dakota - no probems
2009 Toyota Corolla - two issues within the first 90 days

So far I've found GM cars to have the fewest issues, although the '84 Z28 had problems. Honda comes in second, followed by Dodge. My 2006 Dakota has been perfect, the '92 Stealth (actually a Mitsubishi, so I can't blame it on Dodge) was a pile of crap. Ford and Toyota are tied for last. Every single new Ford and Toyota I've owned has had multiple problems within the first year of ownership.
Wow thats quite a list... I am the opposite, I keep my vehicles untill they will go no more... best vehicle was a '96 Toyota Tacoma V6 4X4 put nearly 300,000 km on it, nothing broke, only routine stuff like oil & tires! Kept it looking like new for all those years only to have a letter arrive in the mail from Toyota Canada this year saying that some Tacoma's frames where not properly rust proofed when they where made and mine was one of them... sure enough my 1996 that looked maybe 2 years old had a massive hole in the frame on the inside of the box rail!! However Toyota being the great company that they are extended all 1995 - 2000 Tacoma's frame warranties out to 15 years with no limit on km, plus any truck that was found to have a hole in the frame they are buying back from the owners at 150% (yes I said 150%) the best book value (read showroom condition) regardless of the actuall condition of the truck!!! So for my 1996 Tacoma with 290,000 km on it they gave me just shy of $17,000 in May of this year! And on top of that I was allowed to completely strip the truck down (I even kept the box)! Plus I should mention... My Dad has a 96 Tacoma as well; no problems, grandmother = 1992 Camry- no problems, sister= 1995 corolla= no problems, friend ofmine = 2004 Tacoma double cab- no problems.............So buddy you can complain all you want about your precious volume control buttion and bad mouth Toyota... people buy Toyota's because they run forever... period!

1) I'm not bad mouthing Toyota, I'm simply reporting facts. If you think a broken volume control on a brand new car is acceptable, perhaps it's because your expectations are low as a result of owning too many Toyotas. Trust me - most cars don't have any problems when they're brand new.

2) My experience with Toyotas mirrors what several major reliable studies have found - Toyotas aren't as reliable as some domestic brands (Cadillac and Mercury, according to this year's JD Power reliabilty study. Toyota actually moved up a little this year - they're usually behind Buick as well). According to the recently release 2008 JD Power reliability study, the Corolla isn't at the top of the econobox class, the the Camry isn't at the top of the mid-size class, etc. In fact, a Toyota badged car didn't finish at the top of any class.

One last thing, none of the "high" odometer readings on which you base your lofty opinion of Toyota are particularly impressive. You really need to try driving/owning something besides a Toyota - you may be surprised.

LoL , I have owned Hondas, Toyota's, Chev's, Mazda's, never fords or dodge, although i know several people that have owned them and moved on the better vehicles. Can u honestly picture any other manufacture besides Toyota admitting they made a mistake on a 12 year old truck and giving the owner 150% showroom value for it??? Look at the Ford firestone recall a few years ago... what a mess that was... every vehicle I have ever owned that was not a Toyota has been trouble and loads of it, one exception is my 1990 Honda Accord EX-R wiith a "lowly" 440,000 km and still does not burn a drop of oil... perhaps if u actually kept a vehicle longer than a year your naive eyes would be opened but untill that day you go on with your chevys, fords..etc.. lmao, someone has to make the rest of us look good

PS: perhaps in our next post we should talk resale value... hmm an 8 year old Toyota anything vs (insert domestic scrap name plate here)

I'm with Reality Check.
Brand new cars should not have faults or problems.

If whatever is made by other manufacturers and installed in a Toyota, Toyota bears the responsibility blame and their reputation. I buy a Toyota. Not a whatever name radio.

However if you're not happy with a Corolla you can sell it very fast and get a good price for it. Same cannot be said for GM, Ford or Chrysler. Even at car autions.

I cant wait to see the day a mass produced product can be produced without having any little glitches in a few models, isnt that why someone invented the warranty? Come on people, everyone knows those "initial quality" surveys are completely useless.. it has nothing to do with the longevity and durability of the parts. If someone is going to only keep there auto for a year or two why waste money on it, go get a Kia or the like... Talk to anyone with half a clue who is looking at picking up a good used car... lets see who here would really consider that sweet 1990's ford tempowait! wait! is that a dodge neon over there at the corner of the lot??woot!! woot!!! quick run over and lick the handle so no one else can buy it first
