"Satellite antenna with prewire"?

Hey guys,

In the booklet it says that the Corolla has a "satellite antenna with prewire"....just out of curiosity, what does this mean? Can I use my Starmate 4 with this prewiring....? Or is this for XM?

I just don't understand what they mean by this at all.....I did a quick google and came up empty...

Thanks!

I think that deals with the GPS navigation, not XM or Sirius radio.

You see that square thing on the roof? That's the satellite radio antenna. The pre-wire means all the wiring is installed in the vehicle. All you need is the receiver which Toyota charges $400 or something like that. I don't know if you can use a portable sat radio and take advantage of the wiring.

It has the satellite receiver wiring (AVC-LAN bus to the Headunit) and satellite antenna wiring installed. Both connectors are located behind the righthand trunk liner. XM (part #'s 86180-0W031 and PT546-02080) or Sirius (part #'s PT54500080 and PT54502090) are required. Each set-up requires the receiver and fit kit. I guess that the pre-installed wiring was originally for XM because the SIRIUS installation does not use the factory installed antenna (the kit has a seperate antenna which is installed on the trunk lid). I would assume that the antenna connectors are not compatible between the two systems (there may be an aftermarket solution).

XM radio installation help

Sienna:

I just read your post and it seemed quite informative. I just purchased a 2009 Corolla XLE and the Dealer told me it would cost $500 to install the XM receiver because they had to pull apart the front of my dash where the CD/radio unit is installed. I told him that our car was equipped with the "AUX Audio Port (for a MP3 player) and the XM Sateliite Antenna". The unit in the car is a "AM/FM/In dasH 6 CD Changer with WMA/MP3 playback capability, Satellite Capability (Requires Receiver & Subscription) with 6 speakers." Now if I understand you all I need to buy is the receiver (part # 86180-0W031) and the fit kit (part # PT546-02080) and XM will play thru my unit? The unit has the AM/SAT button.

I checked in my trunk where you indicated and I have two female plugs. One is a multi holed rectangle plug and the other is a square on hole unit. I assume these are the harnesses for the antenna and the receiver as u indicated.

So, if i purchased the above, I could install them in my trunk area and not have to take apart the dash unit? I haven't worked on a car in probably 10 years so much of this is new to me. Thanks for any help and appreciate the post you made.

As per the XM Satellite Radio installation instruction, the only "CONFLICTS" is with the JBL Premium Audio. I just finished installing the XM kit in my 2009 Corolla S with NO problems. There're 2 connectors at the upper end of the factory harness, the WHITE connector is used for the TUNER. There's a short harness that comes with the FIT KIT which extends the ANTENNA connector (square shaped connector at the lower end of the factory harness) to the TUNER. You can view the PDF installation instructions at http://www.trdsparks.com/displaypart...&parts_id=2121 (upper right corner of this link has the mentioned file). Taking my time, it took about 1/2 hour to complete the installation. Hope this helps.

XM radio installation help - JBL Premium Audio?

Sienna:

That is super and exactly what I was looking for. I plan to order from the site you referred to for the installation instructions. I do have one more question before I do that. In your response, you mentioned that the only conflict is with the "JBL Premium Audio". How do I know if I have that system or not? My system from the Invoice sticker states "AM/FM/In dash 6 CD Changer with WMA/MP3 playback capability, Satellite Capability (Requires Receiver & Subscription) with 6 speakers".

Thanks again for answering so quickly. Appreciate all your help.

The headunit usually has the JBL logo on it. You can see the logo on the upper left area of the fourth image in the "INTERIOR" tab. http://www.toyota.com/corolla/photo-gallery.html

Thanks again for responding. Appreciate your help. Although my system looks exactly like the picture, it does not have the JBL symbol in the upper left corner nor does it have the XM symbol above the AM-SAT button as in the picture. So I assume I am safe ordering the tuner and fit kit as indicated in your earlier post. I will do and let you know how it worked out. Although I think it will take me more than a 1/2 hour. Probably more like an 1 1/2 or so. That's because I am some what unfamiliar with the procedure.

Thanks.

My Headunit is exactly like yours minus the CD changer (1 CD at a time). Prices for the units are alot higher in Canada ($430 with tax). There're many US Toyota internet parts sites with great prices but with the shipping/brokerage fees/duty the savings are not that great. Also the headaches would be bigger if there were any problems with the parts.

Thanks Sienna1, that's really helpful. I read thru the install instructions and have a couple questions tho. Under Step 5 - In Process Functional Test, "b" says to "Install the short pin" but it doesn't elaborate. Can you tell me what this is exactly? Also, the last step says "Perform the XM RID registration process". Can you tell me that entails?

So far what is your opinion on the integration with the head unit? Is it easy to control, does the display say the chanel names or just numbers, etc.

Thanks!

Well, ship it to the UPS store at the border--there must be one at the closest little town on the US side of the border, they do a LOT of work with Canadians . Pick it up in person, do some more shopping, come back, pay your gst+pst. You might come out ahead. Brokerage is usually what kills you, that, and the shipping fees. Or, if you are ever outside the country for more than 7 days, do the same, declare the item you shipped to the UPS store as "goods to follow" to CRA on the way back (ask for form E-24) get it stamped. That way, when you go to pick them up, you can bring up to $750 worth of stuff with you with no tax, no duty and no brokerage. I've been told that you could actually get them shipped to you, pay duty/tax, and apply for a refund retroactively, but that wouldn't solve the high brokerage/shipping charges.

Hmmm, if the head units are the same, do you think it is possible to get the US 6-CD changer (non-JBL, since I bet that has other doodads that are different than the stock stereo) and put it into a Canadian Corolla? I like the idea of an in-dash changer, although, a memory stick slot might be more useful in these days of mp3s

The "SHORT PIN" is another word for FUSE. In this case, it would be the one for the radio (already installed). A "RID" (radio ID) is assign to every satellite radio. It is used to activate the satellite radio when you subscribe to a provider. The headunit can display channel # or station ID or song title or artist (MAX 8 characters). The headunit SAT functions are similar to the features available on AM/FM/CD/MP3. As for shipping to a UPS store, many businesses will only ship to your credit card billing address so as to prevent fraud and the savings will shrink even more with the drive to the border at $1.15/L Canadian ($4.35/gal US) for gas.
