I had a $400 head unit in my older car and despite parking it in ghetto neighborhoods notorious for theft, my aftermarket unit with the face taken out, never fell victim. However, poor saps would get their factory unit stolen. Factory units costs HUNDREDS even over a thousand in dealerships, however you can buy them for a fraction at eBay.  ironic

You don't have to park in a "high crime" area or ghetto to have a break-in.
Cars are broken into daily in upscale shopping mall parking lots and other places where you don't see drug dealers and prostitutes standing on the corner next to a bag lady.
It only takes them seconds to break-in and dig around under the seats and in the glove box find the likely hiding spots of the faceplates.
If the can't find it, they'll move on to the next car, but your car already has a broken window.
Factory units don't get stolen alot because they only fit certain cars even if they fit several car models from that manufacturer.
Aftermarket stereos can go into 99% of cars on the road rather than 5%.
