I'd be interested to hear how the Jetta treats you, back-wise and whatever else. Did you get another manual shift? They are hard on backs. I sold a brand new '83 Chevy 5-speed stick mid-size truck and got a van when my back went bad that year. Cost me a TON of money.

I might join you in the "Former Gen 10 Corolla Owners Who Migrated To VW's Club" if a '10 Golf GTD isn't too expensive.

At least then I'd get Corolla mpg's and more comfortable seats... but sadly at the expense of VW (un)reliability.

I traded an '02 Golf for my Corolla and I miss it sometimes, especially the hatchback cargo capacity.

Yeah I got another 5 speed manual transmission with the Jetta S. Originally I was going to be getting a VW Rabbit 2 door with the 6 speed auto, however the Rabbit 2 door has less seat adjustments and cheaper fabrics along with no armrest. So for a couple $ more, I got a Jetta S with a 5 speed manual to get the better seats, 2 more doors, and the armrest.

The Jetta seats seem to be good so far after a couple days and 200 miles. They definitely have more support (almost too much), and are more adjustable in useful ways. I have not found the perfect seating position yet, however my back feels perfectly fine when I get out of the car. The Jetta has a ridiculous amount of leg room to go with the seats as well. Also the armrest in the Jetta is very soft and adjustable, WAY better than the hard plastic Corolla turtle-shell armrest I had. The whole Jetta interior feels made with much nicer, softer materials to be easier on the eyes and hands.

Other than that, the VW <-> Toyota comparison is pretty much what you would expect. The Jetta has more power, more features, firmer ride, and is not put together as nice as the Corolla is. By that I mean I have a few things in the Jetta that are not lined up perfectly for interior and exterior trim pieces, while my Corolla was flawless in construction.

Ehh, don't always believe what you read.

My family owns
2008 Jetta:50,000mi no issues
2009 Corolla: 38,500mi no issues

Of course, the Jetta is a bigger pain to work on, and the dealer likes to charge more maintenance, but that seems to be part of the mystical German engineering. That being said to me the Jetta is " just a bit nicer, for a good bit more cash" than a well equipped rolla.

I have free scheduled maintenance for 3 yr/36K , so fortunately I do not have to worry about the $100 VW oil changes and other expensive stuff until 2012

Plus my insurance went down a lot. It dropped ~20% switching from the Corolla to the VW. Was not expecting that at all.

As long as you're happy with it and you're backs happy, then it's a good situation.

Great idea but I didn't see any for our Corolla. I would get a set in a heartbeat for any extra little room.
