I removed the rubber rug, drivers side, on my 2009 Corolla LE today for cleaning for the first time. (15 months old - I'm not anal about car cleanliness) I begin to understand why such suspicion has fallen on the rugs as a contributor to the 'runaway gas pedal' stories. Getting the rugs off/on their retaining hooks requires infinite care. Much harder than it was on my 2000 Corolla. No minimum-wage employee at a car wash is going to take this kind of care if he removes the rugs.
really? it took me all of 2 seconds to remove the mat from the hooks. I even removed my carpet mat and placed a rubber one in there as I always tend to wear out one section of the mat by the pedals.

Simple solution: I always do a check around right after I got my car back from servicing or cleaning. If you couldn't spare that little moment to do this.....Can't blame anyone.
I have had my car for less than a week and have had the mat out twice for vacuming. ( I AM anal about cleaning) Mine come out and go back in with perfect ease.

I take my floor mats out weekly for cleaning... not 1 issue
yeah I check every week too...im very anal about my car and never had I once had an issue, Im very strict with my friends about being careful in my car. they all understand because im the only one with a new car
i think for 15 months there's a lot of dirt accumulated in there that made your mats like that... being anal about your car is definitely a good thing!

Really?
I've taken the mats out many times for cleaning & they come out & go back in very easily.

It took me about 30 seconds PER HOOK, both taking the rug out and putting it back in. The rubber rug had STIFFENED, though the temp here is now in the 60s F. 30 seconds per hook is not something you want a car wash guy fighting. Yeah, you'd better inspect them if someone else has them in and out. Maybe the cloth ones are more easily handled, that's what I had on my 2000, but that cloth mat was in bad shape after 10 years. I think I like the rubber one better, just be damned careful how you take it out and put it back in.
I had cloth ones, but changed them out for rubber mats about 4 days after buying the car... no issue on rubber or cloth mats
+1
I've got both types & no issues with either one.
