chopping springs will screw up spring rate and give a screwed up ride and mess up handling...also theres no compensation for the shorter ride height...making ur car more prone to bottoming out

thats why you get short strokes...a spring is a spring is a spring...chopping will only make it stiffer if anything. Its not that bad...the only concern is the spring slipping out of the perches...if you can find a way to level out the cut spring to sit on the perch flush, you should be okay.

No, actually it would change the characteristics...I mean it won't be as good as having race springs or proper lowering springs, but it shouldn't make the ride squishier or anything....like you said, ol' skool guys used to do it all the time be cause of the lack of performance springs available for a decent cost.
