The last time there was an engine that shut down a set amount of cylinders at highway speeds, it was a disaster. GM tried it in the late 70s, early 80s in an engine called the 4-6-8 that would run as a V8, V6, or V4 depending on the speed.

Honda might be able to get it right, but three cylinders running on a V6? I hope they get the counter-balancing right, because that seems like it would run rough. Makes more sense to have it run as a V4.
