Starting a new thread as the other needed to be sifted through to get to the "meat". Being a Highlander Owner for less than a month i wanted to make a proper Contribution to this forum (and i am sure it will be copied to several other forums once this is public). Now on to my findings.

After much reading about the FCC license against the Key FOB I decided to bite the bullet and get buy the $250 Wallet key and give it a shot before announcing that it would officially work.

The new Lexus Wallet card arrived last night and today I verified my latest 10.x version of Techstream and was ready to give it a whirl. Went to my car and followed the steps, "Smart Key", Smart Key Registration, I did not choose the classic version as i wanted a little more "step by step guidance". Put both keys outside the car. started the process of "adding a key" brought in a registered key, the car beeped. Removed the FOB and put the Lexus wallet card next to the ignition and was given the double "Beep Beep". and it was done.

Locked the car and brought both Keys (my OEM Fob and the Lexus Wallet key). Went back to the car with no keys to verify it wouldnt unlock for me and nothing when pressing the handle or inside the handle for unlock.

Brought the Lexus Key and put my hand in the handle, UNLOCK, got in, foot on the brake Button pressed... BAM Started right up.
-------------------------------
Below is what I was using.

TIS 10.00.028
Fotga Newest V8.00.034 MINI VCI (amazon)
OEM FOB HYQ14FBA
LEXUS Wallet FOB HYQ14CBB (Part Number 89904-53511 )
2015 Highlander XLE

I ordered my parts from Superstition Lexus as the parts guy was the most help with trying to narrow down what i needed and compatibility (next post will give more detail how I arrived at the correct FOB)

-------------------

Update: I ordered the insert "key" part number 69515-30350. I ordered this "precut" with my code for my highlander. It arrived today and BAM it works perfect. pic of part number attached, pic of key in a lower thread on here.

so for my total of less than $300 i have a complete spare key/credit card FOB working set.

My lease is up on the Highlander. If the next owner of 5TDJKRFH4FS150988 is interested I have a key that will work for you. I have removed it from the options for my HL for liability reasons. It can easily be added back in, if you so choose.

I started with the FCC Licenses and worked backwards. End result is as follows

I did some investigation with frequencies and found out that the HYQ14CBB used the same as my highlander. But I needed definitive proof it would work or at least beyond a reasonable doubt so i didnt waste $250 a few times on different keys. I went through each '15 lexus model and was able to determine the ES/GS/IS/CT/RC models use similar FOBs but NOT the same wallet key. Further investigation got me to the HYQ14CBB model which was also on the CT and RC models. Confirmed the frequencies and rolled the dice.

Winner :)

My OEM FOB HYQ14FBA has a Dual Frequency of
312.1 - 312.1
314.35 - 314.35

the RC350 is HYQ14CBB Frequency Range of
312.1 - 314.35

-----------------------

Next step is working on the "Key" that slips in the credit card. For now i have to just put the mini one from my FOB on my house key chain

Here is a pic next to one of the PBA cards I removed. (Didn't want to post a pic with a credit card). I took it on an angle so you can see the thickness and how it's not really much different than the card

Yes I talked to Lexus and they have the wallet insert. Its $43. Tonight I will pull my "code" for the key and order it. I will update the thread accordingly once it arrives.

Wow!

My 2014 Avalon uses the HYQ14FBA fob. Had no idea there was such an animal as a wallet key. Getting Techstream (and the mini VCI) to work is easier for some than for others and I messed with it slowly since January or so (bought the Avalon in December), didn't want a brick in the garage. Just a couple of weeks ago did program my spare fob purchased on ebay (getting the emergency key lasercut locally was $20) and felt sort of proud of myself.

And now......

Anyway, thanks for sharing. Clearly you spent a lot of time, and for one, I want you to know I appreciate it.

looks neat. i just don't like that it's almost the size of a credit card. correct me if I'm wrong, i always have my wallet in my back pocket and I'm afraid it might break or bend it in the process.

^ That's my thought as well. I use a clip vs a wallet so the cc's bend in my back pocket for sure. I doubt the fob will bend all that much, considering there is a solid key inside of it.
Otherwise, thanks for doing the leg work! This is going to be extremely useful for a lot of people.

I know i keep my wallet and cash in my front pocket. I usually only keep a few cards and my license there so it isnt much to worry about.

IMO it is sturdy, and if kept inside a wallet with more cards and other things I doubt you will have a problem. After all i am sure it was a consideration in its design and they have been around for many years.

I mainly wanted this because I have zero desire to carry the FOB with no keys attached to it. Since I have several cars i tend to have my standard keys on a different ring.

Wallet key is perfect for my needs, including when i go to the gym, its one less thing for me to keep track of.

Confirmed! the key that I mentioned ordering works!

i have updated the first thread with the proper part numbers. I have a current working Wallet FOB, working Key that slides inside and my two original FOB/Key combos.

Correct, these are designed more for a convenience key than the active key. This stays in the wallet and has no buttons. I just walk up to the car and it unlocks when i put my hand in the handle. When walking away i just touch the ridges in the handle and it locks. In the event of a dead battery there is a removable key in the credit card that i can use to unlock my car to get in. Again this key just remains in my wallet and i dont have to carry a key to my car as long as i dont mind locking it when i step away by touching the handle rather than hitting the button. When i walk up to my trunk i can still hit the button under the lip and the door opens without needing to remove my key from the wallet.

my other two factory keys have the buttons lock/unlock/trunk/panic.

I read somewhere that to add a key one would need a Techstream Security Professional subscription. This was some tine ago, I wonder if this is still true. I have a couple of laptops but one is win7 and the other is win 8.1 both 64bit so I guess I will have some work to do to install the XHorse MVCI driver. My dealer code is hidden somewhere I have yet to find out. Love the idea though. Anybody from CT doing this? Would appreciate some help here.

how far from the Throggsneck are you? I work on the qns/LI border and would gladly help you out.

I dont have the link handy, but i can send you the link to DL the software i have on my laptop (I left it at work this weekend) on monday. This way you have the exact tool i used and confirmed working with it on my 15.

Hey Arista5, it's great to hear from you. I bought the cable and donwloaded the latest TIS. I spent some time already to install the MVCI driver and Techstream on my older Win7 laptop.

I cannot work on the HL until after June 15 because of a previously planned trip. My plan was to debug the TIS before buying the Lexus wallet. Just hearing from you gives me great confidence. I really appreciate it.

Well all, I want to give an update...

I have a '13 camry with the smart key, which has the same FCC ID as the highlanders.

I bit the bullet on the wallet key and it did NOT work...

I work at a Toyota store, and used our TIS Techstream with no luck.

I have access to a lexus Parts Catalog and it seems that the Smart Key ECU MUST be the same type of ECU to accept the programing, and not just the same frequency...

I'm going to call a local locksmith tomorrow to see if he has a way to "jailbreak" the Smart Key ecu.

I'll keep y'all updated. But it looks like the highlander may be one of the few Toyotas that has the same Smart Key ECU as the Lexus models with the optional wallet FOB...

After seeing the trouble BgDawg is having i am doing some further research on the options for the 13' Camry he has. I will do some research to see what i can find on that.

looks like there is a handful of the lexus wallet keys and just narrowing down is the hard part.

Braden, since you work in a Toyota store, can you get me the OEM part number for the Smart ECU? it will help me tremendously trying to figure out which car had the same.

#36 ·
Sure,

Thanks for looking into this. I can't seem to find anything... The OE part number for the SE Camry ECU is 89990-06111.

From the looks of it, the only car that shares the same ECU... (Different part number due to the bracket that is attached) is the ES350. But I don't see a wallet key offered for that vehicle.

The part numbers on the XLE Camrys are 89990-06090 and a 89990-06091. It depends on the build date on which one it has...

Thanks,
Braden
