Please list below what TSB and Recalls that have so far been reported(In detail) for the 2014 Highlander. If there is a link or image of the report, it would be great to include it.
I hope we can make this a sticky and can add to it in a easy to find list with minimal repeats and such.(Hope it stays slim!)
sweeneyp:
Please keep this on topic by only posting TSB's learned about and recalls. This is NOT a thread to discuss the problem, only give a systematic list of the TSB's/recalls as they are discovered.
I brought it in and it took a little over an hour for a software update, not sure why it takes so long though. On the phone they told me that the job is listed as 1.5hrs.
Rather than a thread on this why don't we just have the mod create a read me in the top section with the necessary links for all to see. Here's the link to the NHTSA website for recalls/TSB's and complaints. Somebody else can post the one for the Toyota website and we should be pretty well informed with those.
Newest Safety E01...fuel pipe. Was also told had a computer update "Smart Tech" to do. Anyone know what that is. Had bad p. connections, but think thats what I heard? Tnx.
Long story/short. Hadn't rec'd (yet) toyo. notice about this potential issue, but my vin# showed. Dealer svc. said bring it in. Appt. this a.m. At first told didn't know what to do. Finally (2 free double espressos later lol!) Mgr. got it clarified & apparently I was 1st one to be inspected, hence initial confusion with SA. So...
1..Smart tech update n/a on mine. 2.. Pic. is part inspected on mine. My part had no # & apparently means its ok & no further action required at this time. But, if 1 or 2 on part apparently means its not ok. If so, sounds like it'll get parked right there & suppose to get loaner car? This issue so new, no info. at this time if part needed, how long to get?Anyhow, just how it went for me.
2-21-15 CD software update and Entune TSB 2015 Ltd
While on a 2,000 mile trip I noticed the CD player would become scratchy and skip around. I noted that on the service trip and they did a software update "EL1318".
They also did a "T-SB0160-14 Entune Audio Head Unit Software Update (Panasonic)"
I see a complaint about a water leak. I thought I saw a few drops come inside dripping toward the left front corner of the drivers seat. I thought it was from water making inside as i had the door open. Now I am not so sure. Time for more testing. Anyone else that has seen anything please speak up.
I am surprised there is not more discussion here. Maybe the thread title could be modded to include reference to the recall of risk of loss of power steering assist.
I am bummed we have a recall so soon. Recalls are a way of life and this seems relatively minor, but still its not what i wanted to hear as a first time Toyo owner.
^ Letters going out don't relate to when they have a fix. For instance, there's a safety recall on the Tacoma that went out in Sept. In Nov, we got a second letter reminding us of the recall and that Toyota is still working on a fix. It's almost April, and they still don't have a fix. So don't get your hopes up that replacement parts/fix will be available at the time of notification.
Toyota is addressing dealer stock initially, and will then deal with owner vehicles. I recently saw two HL's sitting off to the side at one dealer's lot with a handwritten sign taped to inside of windshield. It read "STOP SALE". Took me a day or so to figure out these were dealer stock recall cars. There is a TSB (among other documents) linked to the NHTSA site under the specific recall number. Basically shows how to teardown lower steering column trim enough to see if the steering column numeric identifiers fall within the range of suspect columns and EPS ECU's. Winners (losers really) are pulled from dealer stock awaiting a yet to be determined fix. We 2015 owners won't be addressed till last. The whole scene sucks arse, but I cannot say I'm surprised. I'll see if I can link the TSB to this thread later tonight. I'm currently posting from my lowly S3 with a data limit.
It will be interesting to see if the finalized repair procedures for affected vehicles will include a re-calibration of the steering angle sensor that directly attaches to the clockspring/SRS coil.
If the replacement and reflash of EPS ECU requires the disconect/reconnect (i.e., R&R) of the steering angle sensor, the steering angle sensor must be re-calibrated via TIS or the vehicle steering will be severely affected, to the point that steering will not properly correct to center after a left or right turn. Honda requires the same re-calibration of their steering angle sensor using HDS (Honda Diagnostic System). I'm really hoping that I dodge this bullet once I let the dealer determine whether or not my vehicle is affected. I have so little trust in most dealer service departments. I could easily see the tech skip over critical repair procedures to make up for how little time Toyota will pay them for the job based on internal time/hour rates, assuming he even knows what he's doing to begin with.
I've actually considered refusing the recall, but refusing a safety related recall leaves the customer with zero rights (and even liability exposure) in the event of a future EPS component failure or failure-related accident/ fatality.
Boy, what a mess. Not looking forward to bringing it in to check for this. Looks like it could create all kinds of new rattles and annoyances. I am sure Toyota will provide loaners if it does need the repair. Wonder if they will do the inspection process before having the repair parts?
BA...Curious... Your Links say nothing about "steering angle sensor", just "inspection, replacement of EPS/ECU" if needed. No mention of anything else. Seems to me if SASensor was involved, it would be listed? 2014HL not involved, but tks. for info.
@ Buffo, I am not saying it's an official part of the recall, but there is a good chance the sensor may have to be disconnected ond reconnected in order to replace the ECU. Also, replacing the ECU alone could necessitate the SAS recalibration. The shop manual should answer that decisively, and Toyota has not finalized the recall procedures yet.
@ Marqevans, I agree this can get messy. I would not let the dealer service hacks do the verification inspection without parts and procedures in hand. I would wait a while, anyway. The affected in-stock units will be the first guinea pigs to undergo the recall. The one HL I saw with the "Stop Sale" warning had a VIN in the 80,000's, and the second had a VIN in the 120,000's. I'm just under 99,000. There's really no telling how many of the 112,000 units included in the recall are HL's. There are other models also included in the 112,000 (i.e. Camry, etc.).
Thanks Bent Arrow for taking the time to detail all you have found thus far, including the VINs.
In light of the recall, I am thinking it may be wise for the Mods to rename the Thread to actually spell out that THERE IS A RECALL to make sure all are aware. I was hoping / expecting to see many more replies here.
Hearing that dealers are foregoing an oil change at the free 5K service because they will have to pay for it, leaves me with little faith that they will pony up any and all necessary resources to address our recall properly. Doing what saves them money is a priority. I too think its a good idea to only let them check your car when they have inventory in hand of the new circuit board.

Current EPS issue is listed as a "Safety Recall" & one should rec. toyota notice (assuming reg. address on record in correct) if their HL is involved. Good Q cause definitely important priority if part needed..will your dealer parts dept. have it to complete repair at time of inspection?
FWIW..Campaign Safety Inspection apparently diff. CSI was done on mine for fuel pipe. Never rec'd toyo letter, just verified by toyo. & my dealer using VIN# to have inspected. Mine didn't need part which was good. Did rec. toyo "Safety Recall" notice for "error in seat belt software update notice" & my dealer did update. Lots on oil/OCIs, but OT here.
I got the following message when accessing the Toyota.com users site, which is where I have my 2015 HL registered. Of course it didn't look like this but the text is here.

At the cost of repeating myself, Toyota service hacks are not going to tear my car down TWICE if the steering column ultimately requires "repair". Parts and procedures on hand, or no dice. If I have to, per the "preliminary TSB", I will do the teardown myself and per the TSB, I will determine if the steering column ECU requires replacement. I will take a very high definition photo of the identifier sticker, followed by a video going from the steering column identifier to at least two VIN stickers on my car (as proof that they are looking at my steering column and my car). If the car needs the work, they can order the part (assuming it's not already there), and only their top master tech/shop foreman will complete the work. If my request is not deemed reasonable, Toyota and my dealer's service manager can f-off. If they try to void my warranty, I will bring litigation against Toyota. At worst, the only warranty they can void (if they win) will be the that for the trim panels and fasteners removed to gain access to the steering column and visual identifiers that rule the repair in or out.
I'm a little surprised how many people are taking a lax approach to this mess, but that's their business. Either way, not determining if the components are part of the recall is unsafe and could cost me money, or worse, the safety of my family. Not covering my bases is a potential financial, safety, and legal liability trap.
I suspect the dealers won't accept appointments for this unless they have the parts. Can't believe they would be able to let you leave with the car if they know your car has the problem. Too much liability.
Would be nice if we knew how many cars actually had power steering failure. It would also nice to know how many cars are sitting on dealer lots known to have the problem.
