What phone mount/holder are you all using? I don't like the ones that clip into the air vent because it blocks the A/C and I don't like the CD slot mounts because it blocks the touch screen.

What windshield mount or dash mount phone holders are you all using?

Please post pics.

Thanks

I don't use a phone mount, I don't use my maps too often when I do, I plug it in and tilt in near the ports in front of the gear shifter. I have it tilted at a 45 degree angle and can see my screen. I have the volume up about 2 before max volume. Any windscreen mount works well, problem is when you take it off it smudges the screen... As for as dash mounts the good ones have a plastic base you need to permanently stick to your dash. And then you suction cup the mount on that. I have not found a good dash mount that is suction cup without the plastic base. So dashboard mounts would require you to permanently stick something on your dash in order for it to work. Windscreen leaves residue, but is better than a permanent disc/puck on your dash.

I use an earlier model of this brand:

Fits many smart phones. No plastic mount to permanently attach, and easy to move between cars. It does leave a shiny spot behind, but that helps to mark where to remount after a move. Works on dash or windshield.

So I purchased the Macally dashboard mount and installed it in the shelf like Faisdogg. I found that out of the box, you have to install it to the bottom of the self because the arm does not flip around. I also found it hard to get a solid grip for the base because the base goes over the little removable plug for the pass through area for the cords. So I took the arm apart and flipped it then attached the base to the top of the shelf because it's smooth plastic and you can get a very solid grip. It also leaves the pass through area open to make the soace useable.

To flip the arm: On the side of the arm joint there are 2 circle stickers you need to remove to take out a screw in order to remove the arm. Then you just flip it and put it all back together. If you don't flip it and just stick the base on the top part of the shelf, the adjustable support arm will just be up in the air. If you flip it like I did, you can use the lower support stand for added support. I placed the support arm inside the shelf but you can also have it lay against the outside edge of the shelf.

I'm still deciding if I want to keep it. I think I would prefer to have the phone at eye level. However I do like how solid this mount it. I angled the arm more towards the drivers side later and it's a little more comfortable to look at.

I have a different problem, but I found your post in a search, and it gave me an idea.

I just got an Incipio Moto Mod Vehicle Dock for my Moto Z. It is designed to connect to an air vent. I currently have it attached to my Highlander's right, driver side, air vent. However, I don't really like that position for several reasons. It obstructs some of the air flow, and I'm a little nervous about its security. I do love the way I can pop my Moto Z in and out to its dock, and really want to keep the Incipio.

I was considering purchasing a CD mount holder to try to clip my Incipio's air-vent clips to it at the CD slot. I thought I might be able to leave off the the CD-Slot holder's phone plate and clip my Incipio's clips to the CD mount itself.

After reading Jamesk post, I was wondering if the Macally dashboard mount could work for me. I would install that mount on the shelf, the way Jamesk has his, and attach the vent clips of my Incipio to the mount itself.

I would truly appreciate any ideas about this, or another solution.

TIA

i found a simple rubbery tray like item with a slit that I can prop my phone in. this allows me to keep it on the dash just above the steering wheel and in site and within my view while driving. I found looking down in other lower areas was too dangerous. So I threw about 3 or 4 different mounts aside.

With the cell sitting just on the dash its working great, and in particular for gps. Will look for a full features heads up dsiplay soon. I saw a couple, but I want notifications, texts, etc.

I use the iring. I have not found a great place in the HL to mount the little hook yet. I tried it on the left where one of the buttons is supposed to be on the dash but it fell off.

Great part is you can restick it any time you want.

I like the iring because it is small and the ring part on my phone case also functions as a stand and a way to hold the phone and not drop it

I have a rubber tray looking thing that is super grippy on the bottom and sturdy on top. The top has 2 slits about .5 inches wide and this is where I place my phone, Just above the steering wheel on the dash.

This for me is the safest place to have a device, which is IN THE LINE OF SIGHT while driving. I will NOT use a mount that forces me to look to the side or down,a as this right there is a cause for getting into an accident.

If its not in the line of driving sight, its not in my car to use. No fan clips, no cup holder mounts, etc.
I plug my USB cable through the shelf pass through, and it works very good.

This is something like the one I have.

Although I think mine is lame looking with 1 slot, and can be had for $2 off some deal link.
Its worth $8 , as not having it, raises the value to just buy one so you don't distract yourself.

I used this in my 2010 highlander until I bought the 2017 yesterday. It worked great in the old car because i used a vertical pointing cig lighter that was in the console. So I could angle the phone almost flat and it wouldn't fall off the magnet. These things don't work at 90 degrees, but hold pretty good once you angle it 45 or less. I also stick 2 of the metal plates to the inside of my phone case so I have more surface area to attach to the magnet. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I9I8O2Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I just moved it to the 2017 and it works pretty good so far. I have to bend the flexible shaft so it goes around any drink in the drink holder. And angle the magnet surface so it is closer to flat than vertical. A little less than 45 degrees. I also have to keep it away from the gear shifter when it is in park by turning the phone sideways. But I really only mount the phone there when I'm already in drive and the shifter is out of the way. It also has a USB plug and the led indicator is blue like the interior lights at night.

I like that Dingmah. Had such a setup in the other car. But I tinted my front screen, and get tired of cleaning the suction cup mark. But anything top of dash is important. Keeping it in line of sight, once you do that you realize how much safer and more useful it is inusing OK Google/Siri, and whatever else for Nav, and calls etc. I usually connect the Android Auto, so its no issue, but at times I want the navigation but want to play my music from the SD card.(Maybe it can, I have not tried this option in sync.

I don't have a cell phone mount. If I'm not using the cup holder I'll use that or I just use the tray that came with the Highlander. On longer trips I may put it inside the center console and forget about it.
