Below is a list of all the settings that can be customized on the 2017 Highlander using Carista 3.4.1 (http://www.caristaapp.com/). The main thing I was hoping Carista could do was stop the annoying 5 beeps when I start the car and beeping when I have the door open; which I don't think can be turned off using Carista or Techstream.

Coming from other Toyota/Lexus vehicles, I noticed that the internal temperature gauge seems to be off in my 2017 HL hybrid. In my other cars, on a 70 degree day, setting the A/C to 74 would get the air blowing sufficiently cool. It seems like I have to turn the A/C down to 69 to have the same effect.

I assume I'd need to change this setting:
Temperature dial calibration
-2°C / -1°C / *NORMAL* / +1°C / +2°C

The question is, should I adjust to +1 or 2 or should it be -1 or 2? At the end of the day it's not a big deal and the way the 2017 is set is probably more accurate. I think mentally I'm just not used to it.

I just programmed my 2017 Highlander Hybrid XLE using the Carista and it's pretty slick.

I assume you have a Limited as after spending a few minutes scanning my setup when first connected it didn't list the all features your post listed like parking assist - just the features available on my XLE.

Can you tell me how the "Open Glass Hatch via Smart Key" works? What do you need to press on the remote to do this?

#6 ·
Doesn't look like you can actually open the glass hatch by pressing a button on the Smartkey. Enabling/disabling the setting just allows you to open the hatch when you have the Smartkey on you, without needing to unlock the entire car. So if you disabled the setting, you would have to unlock the entire car in order to open the glass hatch.

I did an inventory of Carista customization options that show up for my 2017 Highlander Hybrid XLE.

As mentioned in a previous post I don't have any options relating to the Limited trim line like exterior floodlight but there are a couple of different ones that show up on my list.

Under DOORS / WINDOWS / REMOTE

Max number of consecutive lock/unlock cycles via touch sensor
2 TIMES / UNLIMITED

Under LIGHTS

Daytime running lights
ON / OFF

Under HEATER & A/C

A/C ECO mode
ENABLED / DISABLED - Your list had A/C Power which I think is just the non hybrid version of the same thing

A/C compressor noise reduction
ENABLED / DISABLED

Open vents to outside air when ignition is turned off
*YES* / NO
Does this actually work on the 2017 Highlander Hybrid?

I see this same option on my 2014 Camry Hybrid and I'm not sure it actually is a "feature" on the vehicle, otherwise I wouldn't have to do the AC off/recirculate off prior to shutting down the car to avoid mold growth in the AC system.

Advanced Diagnostics function / code reset for drivetrain (engine, transmission); eco (emission test readiness) doesn't require a subscription.

Additional diagnostics for safety (airbag, immobilizer, ABS); body control (locks, lights, wipers, parking aid) and Customization does and, at this time, they don't offer any Service functions for the Highlander.

Anyone can tell me, please, do I need cable to connect or it has a Bluetooth that can be used to connect? Also, with first month free trial, is it enough to make abjustments, like lights, door unlock and power windows down on second unlock press and hold?

It works off Blutooth
I have the Carista and its pretty much a brick sitting on my dash.
I also have another I got.
Without Carista subscription they are about the same. Alternate was $15-20~
I think at the time I was looking for one that doesn't eat any battery and turns itself off when the car is off.

I bought mine last month and have two days left on the free trial which I will cancel.

I bought mainly to try out different customizations like remote window/moonroof opening, seat belt chime elimination plus a number of other settings dealing with the door locks, signals and HVAC. Over the last month I've tried different settings on and off and now have it set up the way I like it. Maybe a dealer would do this once for free but probably only one or two settings and I'm sure they would charge a lot more than the price of a Carista if I kept coming back to try different settings. So it was worth the cost to me. I also did a couple of other Highlanders owned by friends/relatives.

If I need to do any changes in the future - which I doubt I will need to - I will buy the one week for $10 - still cheaper than a dealer.

Plus it still works as a drive train/emission tester for free.

I don't like Carista as their marketing when I purchased was very misleading, and when I contacted them to fix their false claims, they barely changed a word which still phrased it as if it was included. I don't support such companies when alternates are available for less and no subscription..

#22 ·
And there are those of us that have had great service from them. I've used it on all my Toyota products including my Daughters Sienna and my Lexus. Well worth the money in my opinion and like already stated I just set it and forget it.

#23 ·
I wasn't referring to my experience with service. I was referring to how the owner markets the product in a misleading manner, and did not adjust it to not be misleading. Has nothing to do with the product.
Just dishonest company in my opinion, skirting the lines of legality. (Not sure if its the same info on the site from when they were doing a "bate and no function" sale tactic).

Free to do what? Diagnostic readings? A $10-25 ODB2 does that WITH auto sleep and much more. BUT not sure about the customization's that are by subscription.

I don't let the internet's limits hinder me from getting the most out of a car, its functionality and flexibility. :)

I'm not hating on it, I am simply stating what happen when they had the website up with Carista Features, and it listed door auto lock intervals and other options that the Carista was supposed to do, and I paid ~$40-50 for it at the time.
After I got the unit and tried, it was not able to perform the door functions without a subscription.
I got in touch with the owner. I told him that the wording and listing of the functions under the heading is very misleading at the least.
He was being a wise-guy, and he changed the order of one word on the site and said " Here, does that make you happy"? It was no different.
If I don't really nEED the item, I surely won't be supporting such "service" or attitude. He didn't even reply to my response to him that it wasn't enough, and others would buy it based on false understanding.
*I now see it have clarified/ the door customization. It took them long enough.

Here is the one I mentioned from the Bay...(a number of others available with like functions. It even clears codes....

Free to do what? Diagnostic readings?
Do exactly what this thread is about, "customization settings". I've got a $4.95 BT OBDII and a Torque Pro app on my phone that can "read" and clear codes. What it cannot do is make the customized changes Toyota's program or Carista can do. Do you know of one that is free that can change the setting that Carista can change? I'm all about supporting, but I'm not about using pirated software that Toyota owns; that would be something much less that support in my view.

I can agree with that, and Carista is the option for it. SO for a one time need and the other use I can see $50 being an option vs going to your dealer for a swap of settings...Which many dealers will do for free if still new, at least once. Not surprised if they don't, but I think most will.

#28 ·
Yeah, my stealership probably would. However, the time to go and wait for an hour while some bloke fumbles around a bit before returning to me is almost hardly worth it. And considering I may not like what I asked them to do and want to change it again, which will require another appointment....Carista wins the time and convenience categories. ;)

Since I was an early adopter I have no fees at all but their website clearly shows there is a monthly charge of $9.99 for extended capability. If I needed to change something I would just pay the $9.99 and move on. My dealer may or may not do it free but by the time I drive 50 miles round trip my gas and aggravation would easily be worth the $9.99

I bought the Carista adapter because it communicates with Bluetooth LE (the iPhone works with this). Most all other OBD2 Bluetooth adapters do not work with the iPhone. I used my Carista adapter with Dash Command on a recent vacation. The Carista application is lacking a couple of settings (ie: I have a Hybrid and can use the Toyota Software and Ebay OBD2 cable I bought 3 years ago to set Hybrid Sound (ie: when the engine is off and the vehicle is moving or in gear it makes a strange noise - there is a volume control in the Toyota settings, but the Carista App does not show this setting at all.)

I got a Carista off of Amazon and here are my impressions:

the Android App has a nice interface. I did not sign up for the customizations add-on trial because my dealer made all of my customizations for me for free. The one thing that I think I might like about Carista is that it did read the TPMS sensors; however unless there is a secret decoder ring, I can't tell which wheel each sensor is associated with. It gives the sensor ID so maybe the dealer can read that and let me know.

the unit starts up nicely, no pairing necessary, just plug it into the OBD slot and fire up the Android app. You are prompted the first time using the app for what kind of device you are reading (the first option is Carista) and after that it is seamless.

It reads ECU data with the free App as well.

The diagnostics and customizations require the paid App. I did go back and forth with Carista Support regarding the paid App, which is just too much of a hassle for me to deal with, and they were polite but would not budge on their current pricing model. So, with that said, if I can figure out how to associate the TPMS ID's with the correct tire, I'll keep the Carista for that, but otherwise it's no different than other ODB2 devices, as near as I can tell.
