Malfunction Indicator Lamp (RX-300)

At around 48,000 miles, the "malfunction indicator lamp" on my 2000 RX-300 started coming on. It currently stays on for two or three consecutive driving sessions, then does not come on for the next one or two driving sessions. It then repeats this cycle of coming on and then not coming on.

The manual indicates either a) fuel tank is completely empty, b) fuel tank is not tightened securely, or c) problem in engine or automatic transmission electrical system.

It is not (a) or (b). My question is this . . . is this another planned gimmick scheduled to light up at some predetermined time in order to get me to bring in my car to a Lexus dealer for a potentially unneeded service bill? Or is this light something I should take seriously, and therefore schedule an appointment wirh my local authorized Lexus service station?

In other words, is this light really a big deal?

Thanks for anybody's assistance and comments. This is a great site.
