i think this is about right...my girlfriend's parent's just ordered the IS250 AWD, after taxes i think is 54k or something like that..not sure what options..they have. the IS 350 does seem a little pricy...could this be introductory pricing? or do they not do that in the automobile industry?

Why is it so surprising? The new IS has all the features that the Lexus LS430 has and it costs $40k more. It will be the most luxurious sport sedan in it's class. It performs a lot better than anything else in it's class. The quality of the new IS in real world is almost astonishing. When you get up close and see the lines, the curves, touch and feel, you will realize how good it is. The new IS is still a compact car in real life and Lexus did it on purpose to keep it as athletic as possible with a small size. I see 10 G35s on the road being driven by 50 year old ladies in an hour and there is nothing special about them. Wait till you see it.

I realise that but it's pushing into BMW territory. The old IS300 was bad enough and it topped out near $47k with... well barely half the stuff it has now. I just find it odd that stuff like auto dimming mirror is optional, not standard. Seeing that it STARTS at $50,000, it's a tad pricey. Load it up and you're closing in on GS territory.

The previous IS300 was replaced by the new IS250 and not the IS350. IS250 is close to IS300 in performance (IS300 has a slight edge), but IS250 is far more luxurious for almost the same price. IS350 is a new beast altogether that positions itself close to GS430 in luxury, but far more athletic and performance oriented.

It's surprising because it means that Lexus Canada is hosing it's Canadian customers while Lexus USA is giving American customers the same vehicles for alt least $10k less. In the previous US pricing thread, someone mentioned that Canadian standard equipment level is also LOWER. (I hope this is wrong!!) If not, then spending more money for less is a pretty smelly deal IMHO.

And besides, the GS is a larger and more luxurious vehicle - which will appeal to the Yuppies. It's targeted to the wealthy - which is fine. But the IS was targeted to the DINKS driving 3-series cars with a few extra bucks. Well good luck at $51k.

I hope the Lexus Canada division doesn't expect the IS to become a sales leader (which is stupid IMHO). It has priced itself outside of it's segment. While sales might be brisk the first year (because it's new), it will tank in year 2.

You will have to wait 6 months before you can import it back to here. Something about trade laws or tarrifs or something like that.

I just went over to the Lexus Canada web site. The base IS250 with 6 speed manual tranny is $36,300 Canadian. That price beats the bare bones 2006 BMW 323i which goes for $36,000.

Canada

(TORONTO, Ontario) – Those who love to drive need look no further: the all-new 2006 Lexus IS 350 and IS 250 luxury sport sedans are ready to deliver exceptional power and performance – wrapped in the contemporary luxury of L-Finesse design – to a new generation of enthusiastic motorists.

“From concept to execution, Lexus has created in the new IS series a luxurious sport sedan with performance to thrill,” said Stuart Payne, Director responsible for Lexus in Canada. “Driven by the L-Finesse design philosophy introduced earlier this year on our premium GS 300 and GS 430 models, Lexus has infused the IS series with a new sense of passion and innovation.”

“That passion and innovation continue with a thrilling driving experience, with IS delivering the powerful acceleration, precise braking and superb handling that will positively wow drivers,” Payne added. “We’re confident IS will command attention in the extremely competitive entry luxury segment.”

Lexus developed ground-breaking technologies for the 2006 model year redesign of the IS. “The new IS features many firsts for the global automotive industry,” Payne pointed out. “These include performance enhancements, important safety features, plus functional and cosmetic touches that deliver the ultimate luxury sport experience while ensuring the contemporary luxury that is part of the L-Finesse credo.”

Compared to the previous generation IS, the new model range has been expanded to three models, with several option packages available for each:

· The IS 350 with rear-wheel drive (RWD);
· The IS 250 with rear-wheel drive (RWD);
· The IS 250 with all-wheel drive (AWD).

Each is enhanced with outstanding performance, safety and design features*. Highlights include:

Performance
· All new engines:
For the IS 350, a dual VVT-i 3.5-litre V6 with the world’s first system combining direct and port injection, to produce 306 horsepower and deliver an acceleration from 0-100 kph in under six seconds.
For the IS 250, a dual VVT-i 2.5-litre V6 delivering 204 horsepower.
· All new transmissions:
A six-speed automatic with driver-controllable sequential shift mode and shift paddles located on the steering wheel available for all models.
A six-speed manual is standard for the IS 250 RWD.
· Aerodynamic styling to maximize high-speed straight-line stability.
· All new front and rear suspension, steering and brake systems.

Safety:
· Advanced Vehicle Stability Control on all models, plus Lexus’ state-of-the-art Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system on the IS 350.
· The world’s first twin-chamber passenger side airbag.
· Driver and front passenger knee airbags.
· The first Lexus available with Bi-xenon projector High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS).

Convenience:
· SmartAccess keyless entry system with push-button start.
· Premium AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with in-dash 6-CD changer, 13 speakers, and convenient audio mini-jack. A powerful Mark Levinson audio system is available as an option.
· Optional DVD-based navigation system with backup camera.

Pricing for the all-new 2006 Lexus IS starts at a very competitive $36,300 for the 6-speed manual IS 250 RWD. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the IS 250 AWD starts at $41,900, while the high performance IS 350 with have a base MSRP of $48,900.

2006 LEXUS IS 350 AND IS 250 – PRODUCT DETAIL
THREE MODELS
For the new IS, Lexus expanded the catalogue from two vehicles to three, including a more powerful top-end IS 350 and an all-wheel drive option on the IS 250. The IS becomes the second sedan in the Lexus fleet to include an all-wheel drive option that’s perfect for the extreme driving conditions encountered by most Canadians.

Each model is offered in several trim levels:
· The IS 250 RWD is offered with a manual or automatic transmission and comes in a standard configuration, plus a Leather with Moonroof Package, Premium Leather Package, a Premium Leather with Moonroof Package, and a Sport Package.
· The IS 250 AWD comes with an automatic transmission in five trim levels: standard, Premium Leather Package, Premium Leather with Moonroof Package, Luxury Package, and Luxury with Navigation Package.
· The IS 350 RWD is offered with an automatic transmission in standard and four option levels: Moonroof Package, Sport Package, Luxury Package, and Luxury with Navigation Package.

These option packages include many premium options that are often associated with higher-priced luxury models, including: heated and ventilated seats; power tilt and telescopic steering column; bi-xenon projector High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with Lexus Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS); 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system; and DVD-based navigation system with backup camera.

ALL NEW ENGINES
Performance starts with power, and the IS redesign started with all-new power plants featuring double overhead cam, 24-valve V6 engines. The IS 250 RWD and AWD are equipped with a 2.5-litre engine that produces 204 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm and 185 lb/ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm. The IS 350 RWD is powered by a 3.5-litre engine with sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection that delivers 306 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm and 277 lb/ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. Both engines meet Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEVII) standards for fuel economy and emissions performance.

The V6 engines feature direct fuel injection and dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) to boost torque. Each model employs Lexus’ Electronic Throttle Control System with Intelligence (ETCS-i), a drive-by-wire system that ensures exemplary control across the full throttle range, and an Acoustic Control Induction System that adjusts the intake manifold length to match engine operating conditions and optimize performance.

A dual exhaust system reduces exhaust back pressure at high rpm, helping improve engine output. Stainless steel is used extensively in the exhaust system to reduce weight while improving durability.

ALL NEW TRANSMISSIONS
An all-new engine deserves an all-new transmission. Lexus has equipped the IS line with six-speed transmissions tuned to deliver top performance to the wheels at any speed.

For drivers who demand a more direct relationship with their gearbox, the IS 250 RWD is standard equipped with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The IS 350 and IS 250 AWD are equipped with a six-speed automatic, which is also available as an option on the IS 250 RWD. This Super Electronically Controlled transmission makes the IS quick off the line – from 0-100 kph in under six seconds in the IS 350 – yet delivers remarkable fuel efficiency at high speed. All IS models are equipped with a leather and metallic shift knob.

For IS models equipped with an automatic transmission, drivers can choose fully automatic operation or electronic “manual” gear selection, changing gears using the sequential shift paddles conveniently located on the steering wheel. A shift lever is also available for sequential multi-mode shifting. When the transmission is shifted from automatic “D” into “S” mode, the driver can up- and down-shift by moving the shift lever into the “+” or “-“ position.

GLOBAL FIRSTS
The new IS series incorporates state-of-the-art Lexus technologies, including a number of world firsts. These include:
· Twin-chamber passenger-side airbag: This improved design creates a depression in the centre of the airbag upon deployment, lessening the localized force applied to a passenger immediately following airbag deployment.
· Direct and port injection with double-slit high pressure direct injectors (on the IS 350): A combination injection system that combines a fine-tuned port injection system with direct injection into the combustion chamber. Double slit nozzle type injectors for direct injection are used to optimize fuel atomization, creating ideal combustion under any driving conditions. The result is a homogeneous air-fuel mixture that improves power output and fuel efficiency even as it reduces emissions.
· Combination meter with “light-saber” pointers and multi-function display: One look at the all-new instrumentation package builds anticipation for an exciting drive. At start-up, the speedometer and tachometer needles extend from their bases, then flip to their limits and reset to zero. In addition, the meter rings change colour according to engine rpm and vehicle speed to notify the driver of the vehicle’s operational status, switching from red to yellow when engine rpm and speed have reached driver designated values.

L-FINESSE DESIGN
On the new IS, Lexus continues to articulate the exciting L-Finesse design philosophy that was introduced on the 2006 GS sedans. All IS models feature sculptural styling that is dynamic, simple and intriguing. The IS body combines firm convex surfaces with bold concave areas and a tapered form to impart a sensation of speed even at curbside.

A longer wheelbase allows for increased interior space, and lends a sophisticated exterior styling. The vehicle’s high performance image is emphasized with a clean yet muscular engine hood and jutting wheel flares. From the side, a clean surface with an absence of door-side character lines reinforces the wheel flares and highlights the wide tread, while a tightly carved rear end and short overhang complete the vehicle’s stable stance.

The Lexus reputation for care and attention to detail is evident in the smallest detail, from the redesigned headlamps to the emphasis on aerodynamic body forms. A thoroughly flat vehicle underbody, carefully shaped body contours and specially shaped tail lamps contribute to reduced wind noise and a low drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.274. The active use of aerodynamics on the IS has enhanced the vehicle’s straight-line stability and handling performance at high speeds.

L-Finesse is equally evident in the interior, where large surfaces and long character lines create an appealing design that expresses the Lexus credo for superior quality. Standard features include: auto air conditioning with dual zone control, soft-touch controls, cabin air filter and rear seat heater ducts; and full Optitron instrumentation featuring a multi-information display, tachometer, outside temperature gauge and dual trip odometers.

IS models equipped with the available moonroof feature a dial-type switch with one-touch open/close. The switch allows drivers to concentrate on driving while ensuring the ultimate ease of operation for the moonroof.

SOPHISTICATED DYNAMICS
All 2006 IS series models benefit from completely redesigned suspension systems. The front features an independent double wishbone design with anti-dive and anti-squat geometry, while multi-link control arms are standard at the rear. The new systems combine to deliver stable handling, enhanced road traction and improved riding comfort on bumpy roads. A rear sport suspension is optional on the IS 250 RWD and IS 350 RWD.

All IS models ride on aluminum alloy wheels. The IS 250 RWD comes with performance P205/55R16 summer radials mounted on 16-inch alloy wheels. The IS 250 AWD is standard-equipped with P225/45R17 tires. The IS 350 RWD grips the road on P225/45R17 tires in the front and P245/45R17 in the rear, which are optional for the IS 250 RWD. Both RWD models are also available with optional 18-inch alloy wheels mounted with performance P225/40R18 front tires and P255/40R18 rear tires. A tire pressure monitor system is standard on all IS models to maintain optimal tire pressure for safe ride and handling.

The IS series ensures driver commands are delivered to the wheels with utmost response and precision through an Electric Power Steering system featuring progressive rate power steering. The rack and pinion steering gear is mounted ahead of the front axle centreline for more linear steering response, precise control and straight-line stability. The system is easily adjusted to the driver’s comfortable position through a manual or available power tilt and telescopic steering column.

IS models are fully equipped with front and rear power-assisted disc brakes controlled through a standard Anti-lock Braking system (ABS) and actively tuned to specific braking conditions using Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), along with Brake Assist. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) are standard across the entire lineup.

All IS models with an automatic transmission are also equipped with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). HAC automatically increases stability when the vehicle is starting on an incline. When the IS is in any forward gear, HAC briefly applies the brakes to reduce the backward speed of the vehicle. This controls and slows backward roll long enough for the driver to switch from the brake pedal to the throttle. As soon as the throttle is depressed, HAC disengages.

In addition, the IS 350 RWD is standard equipped with the state-of-the-art Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. The computer that manages the VDIM system is connected to sensors throughout the vehicle that measure such things as wheel speed, yaw rate, acceleration and deceleration at the front, back, left and right, accelerator position, brake pedal stroke, steering angle and steering torque. This system continuously analyzes driver input and compares it to the desired, stable operation. When the computer detects any difference between the two, it instantly calculates what action will correct the deviation and appropriately enhances braking, engine output and steering to maintain stable operation.

SAFETY IN MIND
The IS features a supplemental restraint system (SRS) with standard front SRS airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags. All IS models are also equipped with driver and front passenger knee airbags which are positioned in the lower part of the instrument panel to reduce the impact to the lower body in the event of a frontal collision.

To ensure the safety of all front and rear occupants, all seating positions are fitted with 3-point seatbelts, with outboard ones being equipped with pretensions and force limiters.

Additional safety features include optional Bi-xenon projector High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) for extra visibility. AFS automatically adjusts the angle of the headlamps according to vehicle speed and steering angle, and swivels the left and right headlights independently so the driver can see further into a curve. Fog lamps are also offered as standard equipment for all IS models.

CONTEMPORARY LUXURY IN AN INTELLIGENT SPORTS MODEL
Even though it is an entry-level Lexus, IS is loaded with the luxury features that all Lexus owners deserve. These include:
· The SmartAccess keyless entry system, which allows a driver to lock and unlock the car simply by touching the door handle (with the keyfob in a pocket or purse), and start the car with the push of a button.
· Power windows with auto up/down for all windows.
· Power remote heated and foldable sideview mirrors.
· Leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel – an exclusive Lexus design.
· Accessory power outlets.
· Sophisticated cabin illumination, including map lamps, glove box lamp, dual illuminated vanity mirrors and door courtesy lamps.
· Anti-theft system
· A premium AM/FM/CD/MP3 player with in-dash 6-CD changer, 13 speakers and audio controls mounted on the steering wheel. Every IS is equipped with a convenient mini-jack in the centre console to allow iPod and MP3 players to send their music through the vehicle’s audio system. For audiophiles, a powerful Mark Levinson audio system with 14 speakers (including a centre speaker and subwoofer) is available.

THIS IS INSANE! Canadians ALWAYS get the short end of the stick! I noticed with the Rav4 it was a few thousand more in Canada with LESS FEATURES! the 2004 model for instance was standard with ABS and had an option of side air bags etc... Did we have those options in Canada, no!

Anyways $10,000 is the difference between getting the vehicle in the states or Canada. Thats a HUGE difference we aren't talking marginal, but a whopping $10,000. Who here is going to import it from USA? And does anyone know if warranty will still be covered? The only way I'm getting this ride is through importing it now. Otherwise, I'll just stick to what I have.

Wow, ok the IS250RWD is priced very well. The AWD is ok for base price, a bit expensive for the packages. I mean why is it $5,300 more for an IS250AWD with leather/moonroof over an IS250RWD but the base price is only $4,000 apart? Aside from AWD, that $k nets you power driver's seat and 17" alloys on AS tyres (as opposed to 16" on summers for the RWD).

Real prices from Lexus.ca:

IS250 base: $37,900
IS250 AWD base: $41,900
IS350 base: $48,900

Compared to:

BMW 323i base: $35,200
325i base: $40, 300
325xi base: $42,900
330i base: $47,900

---

The IS250 RWD is aggressively priced, compared to the bargain basement 323i. Not only is the Lexus a better quality vehicle with a better interior, it offers more base features.

Dual zone auto climate control, base audio system with 13 speakers, 10 standard airbags.

The BMW has a 6 speaker system, manual air conditioning, and less airbags. Not to mention the obvious interior, which is subpar compared to the new IS.

In defense of the IS350, it is a "premium" model of the IS, so it carries a slight price premium, and is a bit more than the 330i. With that said, it's a more capable vehicle than the 330i.

Now I agree with most of you that Toyota seems to overprice their cars in Canada, but I have yet to figure out why. Not only that, base vehicles have almost NO features at all. I mean they are bare bones compared to their US counterparts.

For example, it pisses me off that the Yaris does not come with ABS standard, like all Echo hatches did. It also pisses me off that the Yaris does not offer side airbags AT ALL, compared to the Euro Yaris which not only offers side airbags, it even offers a knee airbag!
Last but not least is that the fancy slide, fold flat, recline 60/40 rear seats are *only* available on the pricey RS model. Hell, if they simply made those seats standard, it wouldn't made it a knockout car.

I think these decisions may be made by marketing, or sales, in which case too many greedy bastards work for Toyota and Lexus Canada. I don't mean to be mean but it seems this way. Unless of course the decision came from Toyota HQ in Japan, which would make me really sad.

I've tried long and hard to think about this, and I see NO reason why Toyota prices and packages options the way they do here in Canada.

$37,900 is for the automatic tranny. The 6 speed manual is $36,300. That's what you gotta compare to the BMW 323. I think the Lexus wins hands down at that price.
