Yaris Receives 5 Stars in Crash Test

The results for new Toyota Yaris at Euroncap have just been released. 15/16 front and 18/18 side gives the Yaris the top mark of 5 stars in adult protection rating. 2 points are added for the seat belt reminder. This places the Yaris next to Peugeot 1007 which leads with an extra point for the seat belt reminder.

The car tested was a base model which has the following safety equipment:
Dual front airbags, side impact airbags, head-protecting curtain airbags, driver knee airbag, seat-belt pre-tensioners and load-limiters in front seats, ISOFIX anchorages with top tethers in rear outboard seats, ABS, electronic brake distribution and brake assist, forward-facing Britax-Römer Duo Plus Universal and rearward-facing Britax-Römer Baby-Safe Universal.

Child protection rating was 3/5 and pedestrian protection: 2/4.

It probably won't be a five star in the US. US might have stricter tests and the Yaris in the US will have airbags as an option so it won't do well. Just like the Corolla w/o side airbags. Its a no brainer to have these standard on all vehicles.

I believe that Europe has stricter crash testing then the US. I think Toyota needs to start including side curtain air bags on all its cars, like the Koreans.

Yeesh, a base model with 7 airbags? Now that's emphasizing safety.. though passive only.

Hehe. It is actually becomming standard here in Europe, although the Yaris is the first to come with the knee airbag in that class. The active safety is pretty good as well with ABS, electronic brake distribution, brake assist and in some countries traction control will even be standard as well! The Yaris received the exact same rating as the Prius

Euroncap uses a 64km/h offset for the frontal test with a barrier only covering 40% of the car's front. The side impact test is at 50km/h.

When Euroncap started for some years ago it was the hardest crash test around, but I think the IIHS in USA uses the same standard now. If I remember correctly, the US also has the NHTSA which uses lower speeds, but also tests for rear impact and the infamous test where the vehicles are thrown sideways against a pole.

The was a story in the news some time ago where Toyota announced it had found a way to make iron stronger and the Yaris would be the first car to use the technology. This might be one of the reasons why the new Yaris does so well. I can't seem to find an article about it though and I haven't heard any follow ups on that story.

You mean super high strength steel? It's used in the Prius and no doubt used on the Yaris too.

Yep. That was the name. Thanks (I searched for "iron" and "metal" which didn't give any results on google).
I can see it's also used in the Aygo, but Aygo only received 4 stars. I guess there isn't much to do if the car is too small. On top of that the Aygo only has two airbags in the most stripped version on the European marked.

Oh really?

I don't think so. Not everyone wants them. Not to mention they are not cheap add-ons.
