Detroit Show: Lexus to Show IS Cabrio/Coupe Concept in Motown
Date Posted 11-22-2005
TOKYO — Lexus is ready to spring the next development in the compact IS story, according to sources in Japan.
North America has already welcomed the impressive new 2006 IS 250 and IS 350 sport sedans. But at January's Detroit show, Lexus will unveil a concept teaser pointing to a sleek and different new IS coupe/cabrio, sources say.
A successor to the U.S.-designed LF-C concept displayed at the 2004 New York Auto Show, the Detroit 2006 IS concept is much closer to production, it's said, and points to what will be appearing in U.S. showrooms in August 2007.
Complete with power-operated top, the Detroit car reportedly packs a 5.0-liter V8 with 450-hp output. This will be a bored-out version of the 4.6-liter V8 from the new Lexus LS 460 premier sedan, which will have its official production launch at Detroit. Lexus is also tipped to be readying an IS 500 sedan to target the likes of the Mercedes C55 AMG and BMW M3.
What this means to you: A cool new Lexus IS coupe/cabrio sounds perfect for the United States, and a lusty 5.0-liter V8 sweetens the pot still further.

Now if they could build a stupid manual transmission for the IS. It is stupid how Lexus is trying to mess around with the terminology by making only automatic transmissions. I would be very p*ssed if they offer only the slush box 6 speed auto on it.

Yeah a custom built manual transmission could be bought, but it costs quite a bit. In reality when you buy a brand new stock car with manual transmission, it is supposedly cheaper than it's auto counterpart yet offers more performance. Lexus keeps harping about "oh our automatic is so efficient in the IS that there is no need to build a manual transmission". Who are they joking with?? True performance enthusiasts will always take a manual transmission over automatic whatsoever.

hmm i wonder if the IS coupe will resemble the chops that were posted couple of weeks ago....anyways the new IS is awesome, and with the coupe could Lexus dethrone the 3-series?

I personally would love to see Lexus differentiate itself from the Germans. Every German car is about big as engines. Leave hte big heavy engines to the Germans. Leave the high revving peaky engines to Acura. I would love to see a pair of turbos slapped on the 3.0L or the 3.5L pumping out 400+ HP. Lexus was known to copy German styling, now its just copying something else. Come on Lexus, you guys twin turboed the Aristo in Japan so no reason not to do it anywhere else.
Toyota has left the world of turbo charged engines for good. They declared that back in 2000 by saying they would build high powered naturally aspirated engines for better reliability and cleaner emissions. The last of the turbo Toyota (3S GTE powered Caldina GT4 only for Japan. 3S GTE was built initially way back in 1988) will soon vanish as well. They are headed strictly towards N/A engines. As one of the automotive technology leader and integrator of computer technology with it to make power efficiently, Toyota will be making engines that put out astonishing power from a naturally aspirated relatively smaller engine and pushing direct injection and dual vvt-i technology to it's topmost limit (LF-A officially will have over 500 HP from under 5 liter engine). However, engines will increasingly become hard to modify.
p.s. Lexus IS engineer recently said in an interview that the Lexus IS350 3.5 liter engine is capable enough to put out over 400 HP from just a 3.5 liter engine totally naturally aspirated. They will be show casing it in the IS350 racing car soon.
