I know it has been discussed several times but it looks like it has been confirmed for sure.
Quote:
NAGOYA (Kyodo) Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. has agreed with Toyota Motor Corp. to manufacture Toyota cars in the United States, sources familiar with the deal said Monday.
Fuji Heavy is expected to produce some 100,000 units of the Camry midsize sedan a year at its plant in Indiana, starting in 2007 or thereafter, the sources said.

There ahs been much talk about the possibilty of an AWD Camry again. Knowing that Toytoa has plans to introduce an AWD Avalon next year tiw ould seem a logical choice for them to offer the Camry in anAWD version also. Considering it is the best selling car in the US for the past couple of years and in the top 10 selling cars for the last ten years or so probably. It would give them more opportunities to sell more cars. It is hard to tell if they will use some version of the Subaru AWD system since right now they are using Honda's new AWd system taht was introduced in the RL for the 05 model. This is the sytem they are currently using in the LExus lineup from waht I understand. I may be wrong about that but I seem to rememebr seeing a news report of some kind stating that. I may have to dig it up again.

^^^^ waht he said
there is talk of a joint design between Subaru and Toyota on a compact car. It could potetially be AWD and will probably be the Corolla or Matrix. The info we have seen on here says ti will be in the next 2-3 years I believe and taht would put it jsut in line wiith the next gen Corolla and Matrix both.

The Matrix already has an AWD system. and the Matrix is built on the Corolla's platform, so I would imagine it wouldn't be too much of a strech for Toyota to do its own in house AWD.
oh yeah I forgot about the Matirx already offereing AWD. Oh well they are supposedly going to let Fuji do some kind of design rework of a vehcile in the next 2-3 years so I guess we will jsuthave to wait and see wht it is .

Corolla is already offered with 4WD in Japan. So engineering wise it will not be an issue. It's a matter of making the decision if there will be a market for it. Just remember 4WD will be pricier than 2WD models.

LOL, I doubt Toyota would ever license anything from Honda. SH-AWD is innovative, but doesn't have any use in a Camry or Avalon. Toyota's AWD system is a typical 50/50 torque split on RWD-based car models, and 55/45 on FWD based models. This applies to Lexus models too.
I would have never thought it either but I have read somewhere that Honda was going to license the SH-AWD system to Toyota for use on vehicles. I will ahve to keep looking to see if I can find it again. It has been several months since I saw it.

Are you sure that Toyota is using Honda's AWD system in Lexus??
I am 99% sure I read it on a auto news website. It has been several months since I saw it though. I do not rememebr if they had licensed the product to use it at some future date or if it was already being used in some form. It amy not be in a vehicle here in the US. I ahve looked many times so I can verify it but have not had any luck finding the website again. I wish I could find it so I can make sure I am giving correct information. But like I said I am 99% sure Toyota either is using or will use a version of Honda's SH-AWD.
