They seem to like it quite a bit. I like the sedan a little better. Maybe I am just getting old though and it is more practical for someone with two kids.

PLEASE DO NOT GET RID OF THE OLD TN AS WE KNOW IT.
- Liftback?
The only body versions are Hatch and Sedan.
- Optional ABS
Optional ABS in 2005? I know some people like nostalgia, but why should that hurt safety?
- USA gets the Yaris which is an economy car, but yet they only offer the gas guzzling 1.5liter!
- Nissan Versa as a competitor?
The Nissan Versa is based on the same as Peugeot 307 which is a competitor to the European Corolla. There's a size class between those!
- The shifter doesn't vibrate...
The current Yaris' shifter doesn't vibrate either. The last car I have tried with a vibrating shifter was a Mazda 323... from 1993!
- Yarii?
Yaris isn't Latin. It's Yarises in plural, just like it's Lexuses and Excuses.
We'll be blunt; we haven't given much love to the Toyota Echo, a car that was non-affectionately dubbed "The Clown Car" by this writer. Its tall roof and pudgy body made us think a dozen goofballs with frizzy orange hair and jumbo shoes would spill out when the doors opened. Mediocre cabin trim and shaky handling didn't help either.
I'm glad they have a "positive" review of the both varients of the Yaris. I'm liking the sedan more and more, it looks handsome IMO. As nice as the sedan is I'd still go with the hatch, just personal preference, of course I would like to keep my ECHO and buy both the Yaris varients, but as my dad said I can't have two wives, or three in this case...unless I move to Utah? I can't wait for car and drivers and roadand tracks reviews on these nice cars it will be interesting to see what they think of them as well as consumer reports. I can see the sedan selling pretty well, granted number one for the U.S. at least sedans sell better (generally speaking) than hatchbacks. BUt I'm sure both will pull decent numbers. I wonder how Scion is going to react to this in terms of what Toyota will do as far as direction, go upscale more? Upscale in terms of quality like the Yaris is, not to say Scion is sub-par, but get my drift? No? that's cool.

Have any of you seen the next-gen Chevy Aveo? Don't be too quick to laugh like it's so easy to do at this generation. It looks good, definately better than the Yaris hatch but on par with the sedan. The interior is traditional, no quirky styling elements. This segment is hot right now with Scion and the new Yaris, the next-gen Aveo plus the new Honda and Nissan entrants. Toyota should have made ABS standard as well as side airbags, if they're not.
I always thought looks were subjective... but now I'm glad you are here to tell us the truth so no other person has to waste time setting up their own mind.
I have not seen the next gen. Daewoo, sorry, Chevrolet Aveo. I have seen some concept photos though. The front had some large and cute headlight, but that isn't enough to distract from the Plain-Jane design. The rear lights follow the trend set by the Fusion by being overdesigned and don't match with the lines from the rest of the car which could be mistaken from any other cheap Korean car.
Edit:
It is not like we don't know there are competitors in the segment. But what exactly do you want to achieve by writing "the Echo is a deathtrap"?
