Didn't Mazda have a Hydro Miata a while back? BMW's Hydrogen concept has been around for a while too. Frankly I didn't even know that Toyota had a project in the works.

Edit: Just read that they're first to market.

my 12 and 15 year old supras still put out 0.03 and 0.04 HC ppms when the limit is 0.61 and 0.63. thats pretty clean air if you ask me!

my moms 1990 mini van just blew 0.45 on a 0.63 limit. imagine my horror!

i read somewhere that you can lease these fuel-cell cars for the bargain price of... $6000/month!!!!!

hopefully these things will be in production sooner rather than later. it will be interesting to see how it affects the global economy once the majority of people stop using gasoline powered vehicles. i know it's waaay down the road... but it is inevitable that it will happen.

That's pretty much why hydrogen fuel cell cars aren't on the market. It WILL screw up the economy, OPEC will be pissed, all hell will break loose. From my inside sources, the cars are pretty much ready to go into production.

Hmm...but maybe it'll stop wars in the Middle East?

Excuse my skepticism but, I would assume these cars burn hydrogen but, do not manufacture it onboard.

I would guess that a tank of hydrogen under pressure is much more expensive than a comparable amount of energy from gasoline?

I have read somewhere that hydrogen production from H2O in a car is 30 years away.

Actually, the problem is with hydrogen storage. They can't find a safe way to store enough so that you can get the same milage as gasoline per tank of hydrogen.

Hydrogen under compression is like a bomb.

Another problem is infrastructure. Say if they solved the storage problem. Where would people fuel up?
