Official information on diesel and Hybidn Tundra. I know there has been lots of speculation and such but much better when it comes straight from Toyota.

probably will. Didn't the article say the diesel won't come out til 2009? When's the Tundra being redesigned? 2007? cause I thought 06 would be the turn over year

yeah the hybrud will probably come out first since they already have that technology available. I am sure they can adapt it to the V8 farily easy. I have heard the problem is going to be figuring out how to make it work when towing and things like that. FOr normal everyday driving it should work with no problem.
THe diesel is still in development and will be at least 09 before it comes out according to the article. THey do not have any large displacement diesels liekthe powerstroke and the whatever it is theat GM calles their Isuzu motor.
WIth toyota owning HIno trucks though I am sure if they wanted to they could pull one from them and then work on all of the emissions stuff after the fact. It is not like TOyota has no experience with diesels they just dont have much with big diesels. Everything we ahve seen in the US has been small 4cyl in trucks and Camry's.

mmhmm. The thing is, the hybrid has to be way more efficient than the V8. If their V8 is going to be "highly efficient" by which I read as dual VVT-i and maybe direct injection, then the hybrid's got its work cut out for it. It'll need both a more powerful battery pack (e.g. Highlander's instead of Prius' battery pack) and a more powerful electric motor to increase regenerative braking and of course to handle more power.
With 3 engine options, it'll be really interesting to see how Toyota will market them. Diesel for the working crew? hybrid for the "I need a full size truck but only occasional" crew? and what about the petrol version? Those that dislike hybrid and diesels?

the gas version would be for the every day joe who uses his truck for work but not heavy duty work and does frequent towing and hauling and such. I know here in the area I live in there are lots of horse farms and you would be surprised at how many Tundras are on the roads here. THey use them for light towing duties and getting out to the farm and such. Also here in the US most people that are buying trucks for heavy duty work are buying 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. So they opt for the diesel option. There are very few 1/2 ton trucks taht offer a diesel here in teh US. I am not sure about in Canada. Here people would probably not buy a diesel for everyday driving jsut yet. I still think the US market is not ready for diesel trucks to drive every day.
It would make sense for them to use the "highly efficient" V8 in conjunction with the Hybrid system. IF they can get high mileage out of the standard V8 and then add the hybrid to it.

i doubt they can take the motors from the hinos lol. i work at western star/hino toronto and the motors are very reliable but underpowered. the JO5 is a 4cl 150hp diesel and the JO8 is a 240hp 6cyl.
edit: all hinos under 1997 use WO4 motors which come in the FA and FB. The HO6 and the HO7 (w/o turbo) are available in the FD,FE,FF, and SG.
1998-2004 have the JO5 for the FA and FB, and the JO8 for the larger trucks. 2005+ the stopped making cab-overs and now have conventional straight trucks which still offer the JO5 in the 168, and the 185. The 258, 268, 308 and the 338 have JO8s. The new JO5 and JO8 have a bit more power but only like 20hp more.

yes but in diesels noone relaly cares about HP all they want is Torque. Diesels are for towing and once you get them moving you dont have to have high HP. I am sure they could start with one of those though and then work from there. At least have a startng point anyway.

Can you tell me how much power is in them HUGE Hino trucks I seen in the Middle East? I don't know the model or year, but I do know its bigger than a Peterbilt. Its a cabover if that helps with a huge grill that says HINO in black. I seen Toyota trucks there, bigger than..uh, a international tow truck, not a cab over, but it looks very old, say the 70s?

Youve also got to figure that Toyota wants something NOW that can compete with the Silverado Hybrid.
Id also bet you will see a Sequoia Hybrid to compete with the newly released Tahoe Hybrid.
