Toyota Motor Corp.'s (TM) January U.S. sales rose 14%, paced by hybrid and other fuel-efficient models that have helped the Japanese carmaker close the once-wide gap to its American competitors.
In a press release Wednesday, Toyota said total vehicle sales rose to 160,625; the Toyota division reported a 15% increase to 140,967 vehicles.
Sales of the company's Prius gas-electric hybrid sedan rose 38% to 7,654 vehicles.
Sales of light trucks rose 19% to 63,329 vehicles, despite persistently high gas prices.
Sales at Toyota's Lexus division increased 7.7% to 19,658 vehicles, as passenger car sales rose 37% to 10,979.
