Maybe the concept, but the others look ugly. Especially since Toyota went back to the drawing board after seeing the new Civic.

Damn. That looks exactly like a Yaris. No wonder Toyota pulled the Corolla production and put it behind schedule for remodelling. For the record, there would be no XRS from next year on. This is the last year an XRS model is being offered.

i think the whole going back to the drawing board is just writers writing a story to sell.

toyota is already in pre-production stages with the corolla and work on the upcoming corolla begun as soon as the last gen rolled out 4 years ago. automakers for the most part anticipate what other automakers are planning before launching a new vehicle. if anything i suspect the next gen corolla to break away from its 1.8l to 2.0l. it'll be bigger and heavier and i can't imagine it with 1800cc motor.

XRS will live on past next year......they are simply ending production from July to December along with the XRS and AWD Matrix models. You WILL see the XRS back with the introduction of the new model in 12 months.

"The last production month for these models is June 2006. At that time, they will be deleted from the model line up and we anticipate them to be re-introduced in Q1 2008 as part of the next generation change."

There will be no XRS in the model year 2007, which comes this spring (the CE, LE and S will reappear with little last year model enhancements). In the year 2007, the 10 gen Corolla with appear in spring with ground up new models base Corollas with more power and better than all competitors aimed at no. 1 sales ranking, but there would be no XRS in 10th gen Corollas atleast for 1 or 2 years and then Toyota might introduce a new performance driven Corolla with a new engine.

Why does there seem to be so much speculation that toyota will bump the engine from 1.8 to 2.0?

The 1zz-fe engine is would be in its third generation of corollas but it is still fairly competitive with the new R-series engine that honda came out with. Less HP, but better fuel economy.

I think they will keep the 1zz in the base model and perhaps have a 2.0 for the higher model.

Well, I always thought the 1ZZ was a bit weak for the weight it has to carry around, especially on the Matrix. I'm sure Toyota can keep the current estimates even with a slightly bigger engine and more power.

Looking at competition, the Sentra has a 2.0L now. Doesn't the Civic as well?

No, the Civic has a 1.8 litre. The CSX and Civic Si use the K20 engine (2.0 litre RSX engine)

1.8 + HSD Corolla / Matrix.. is a better but more costly ( at present ) combination. The Premium Corolla / Matrix Hybrids overlap the base Camry / RAV. Just get the costs in line in two years.
