The MKII MR2 was around until 1999 until the MKIII MR2 Spyder replaced it in 2000.
If it wasn't a drop top, it would've been called MR2 in Japan. So, in actuality, the MR2 never died. The Supra has been gone since 2001 with very limited carryover 2002 models.
And Toyota did renew the MR2 nameplate for North America after a 5 year hiatus. But if it's done in Japan, it's usually done for good, as others have said.
It's also good to look at chassis codes. A has always been the Supras, just like W will always be the MR2s. T used to be the Celica, but is now the Scion tC.
