Highlights:
* Toyota announces new Scion-branded sports-coupe
* It will be revealed at the New York Auto Show (April)
I propose that we speculate in the following format:
Everyone gets to make one (1) optimistic/dream prediction and one (1) realistic/most likely prediction. We could format them like this:
Engine Block: ZZ, AZ, etc..
Engine Head: GE, FE
Chassis: T, E, etc.
Propulsion: FWD, RWD, 4WD
Transmission: X gears MT, Y gears AT (or maybe an SMT LSD(yes/no)
Suspension: MacPherson, Double Wishbone, Multilink, Torsion Beam, etc.
Curb Weigth: X,XXX lbs.
MSRP: $XX,XXX
Didn't Scion announce a while back they will not do a 5 year replacement thingie, it may come sooner.....I'm guessing this would mean 2nd gen Tc! (around the same time 8th gen celica comes out!!!).
Optimistic would be a caldina GT4 only a bit smaller, but realistically i'm thinking some sort of AZ with an FE head (maybe dual vvti?). possibly rwd, but more likely fwd depending on the size. if it's small enough rwd, i'm thinking a coupe and roadster (to compete with both the cobalt SS/ion redline and the solstice/sky at the same time), but if it's a larger coupe, then fwd. Tranny will almost definitely be 6-spdMT/5AT, with a possible LSD, but i doubt the LSD. Curb weight i'm thinking around 3k, with an MSRP of approx 17-19k+. I'm thinking macpherson struts for suspension.
I don't know about you guys but it seems if this was supposedly replacing the tC isn't this too soon? The tC has been out for one year, it came out as an 05, why would they replace a hot selling tC so soon? I know that Scion model cycles are shorter than industry adverage, maybe this is an xA replacement? Or just another model to compliment the tC? Obviously this is all speculation until Toyota has an official press release. Here's hoping whatever it is, its coming soon!

if they show it in early 06, I wouldn't count on production/sales until 2007 at least. Making it a 2008 at best. So they'd get 3 years out of it. Short for certain. However, toyota may finally recognize that the coupe market is very fickle what is hot today may be a slow seller in 3-5 years (see last gen celica ... even before the tC).
Plus, the tC is targeted at the younger market (under 25). Those kids like getting new cars. I bet a lot of tC owners would try to get a new vehicle after just 3-4 years. They aren't so worried about the whole "negative equity" concept or anything like that. (just a generalization).
The big issue is that toyota and scion need to give these tC owners something to graduate to. The danger with making the next tC a step up from the old is that you end'll end up with a $26K tC pretty soon. No good. It's happened numerous times and always killed the sales. Ideally, they need to keep a $15K-$20K and then ultimately ALSO have something above that (ie, Corolla, Camry, Avalon relationship or celica & supra to keep it in closer).

Suspension: Double Wishbone front, multi-link rear
Curb Weigth: 2,400 lbs.

Realistic:
Engine Block: 2AZ (2.4L)

I think this vehicle would be too soon for them to have worked together much, if at all. I would venture that next year's show cars might benefit from the relationship, though.
Weren't there rumors of toyota and subaru working on a car together?
Maybe this new scion car is from them working together?
i didn't think they were gonna actually work together to make a new car. I know toyota is using the fuji factory (can't remember which one, i wanna say it's somewhere in illinois) for more camrys, but i don't know anything of them working on a new model together.
