Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) is considering building its eighth North American factory that will be ready to start production possibly in 2009, Kyodo News reported, citing Toyota sources.
Toyota is now considering plant sites mainly in southern U.S. states like Texas, the sources said.
It also wants to build a new engine factory in the United States, they said.
Sales of Toyota vehicles have been surging in North America, the automaker' biggest market, making the company's supply-demand situation tight there.
Toyota is planning to begin new production at a series of North American plants 2006, including another Texas factory and the existing Lafayette, Indiana, plant of Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc., an arm of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., in which Toyota has recently obtained a large equity stake, Kyodo reported.

The Japanese firms appear eager to avert trade spats with the United States by giving more jobs Americans, especially as General Motors Corp. and other major U.S. automakers are struggling, industry officials said.
More jobs for Americans, more Toyotas on the road. That sounds like a win-win situation to me.

Well I guess there goes the "buy American propaganda" out the window Even if Toyota is not "American" the point is its employing Americans and putting money back into the economy directly and indirectly, yes the Big3 still have the majority of employment and factories but last time I checked they were moving somewhere else. Don't get me wrong, its good to proud of your country and support it, and I'm all for it...but business is business and this is what this country was built on-free enterprise and if a company American or otherwise can't make it...well tough luck huh? And no I don't wish for people to be out of the job (i.e GM, Ford) I was just making a general statement not only about them as companies but any company...time to get off my soap box-for now

You know, I get the whole "take pride in your country" bit from people when I say I like Toyotas and I tell them that Id love to be all about the domestics, but the fact is that Ford's and GM's product just doesnt compare to the quality, reliability, comfort and technological innovation that Toyota brings to market.
Ford and GM make nice vehicles, no doubt, but they just dont compare to Toyota, IMO.

Before Toyota will announce the next assembly plant, they will announce the plans for phase two of TMMTX. (San Antonio) Each of Toyota's plants are divided into two. When construction ends on the first phase, the second phase is kicked off.
Example, TMMI (Princeton, IN) Just after Toyota launched the Tundra, they began grading the land behind plant 1. By the time they launched Sequoia, they announced the plans to move Sienna to TMMI in the new phase two.
I'd expect Tajima-san at TMMTX will make the announcement by January 2007. Tundra launches at TMMTX (with light volume) this October.
Rumors on the next vehicle in TX? My money was on Highlander, but I hear moving this causes too much of a strain (loss of business) on the suppliers who currently call on TMK - Japan (Kyushu). Prius is in desperate need of production in NA.
4Runner needs to be moved. A Scion plant is still expected. Personally, If I were in charge, I'd shift production around like they did in 2003.
TMMTX: Tundra --> Tundra, Tundra HD, Highlander and RX350
TMMI: Tundra, Sequoia and Sienna --> No Change
TMMK: Avalon, Camry and Solara --> Avalon, Camry and Unnamed CUV that replaces Solara
Subaru Plant: Camry --> No change
I'm kind of shakey on the whole moving RX350 to TX idea. TMMC has had an awesome success with Lexus proving they can meet or beat Japan's level of quality. However, this would make sense since Highlander and RX330 share so many components. The plan could shift to place Scion in TX and try to make room for Highlander in Canada.
If you made it this far in the posting, I'll wager your head now hurts. (My apologies.)
I heared some time ago that they were looking at building an engine plant in Michigan. Indiana. or somewhere in Canada. Did they ever decide where to build it?

This says it will supply the Subaru/Toyota plant in Lafayette, Indiana. I heard they were looking at Central/northern Indian which would make sense, but I don't know where in Michigan they'll look. I think they'll build it in Michigan since they don't have a plant there.
I won't buy another Ford, Chevy or Chrysler . . . only Honda, Toyota or Nissan for me.
I bought a Rav4 V6 last week.
This weekend I replaced a water pump on my Dodge Dakota, only had 53,000 miles on it.
I have an Accord V6 with 122,000 miles, have only done routine maintenance . . . oil, tires, batteries, etc.

I think the situation is that plant is used to produce the new Camry as well due to high demand, while demand for Subaru ain't that high. So they just want to fully utilize the capacity of that plant. As far as I know, I don't think Toyota and Subaru use the same parts, and surely each of their cars are of different platforms and designs. But things like seat-belt buckles and other components such as radiators and brake rotors might be from the same suppliers......I'm guessing.
