Full Test: 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

It's not easy being ... jade, emerald, lime. We're tired of the word "green" and refuse to use it. Although it has come to mean environmentally friendly, it can also imply naiveté, immaturity or a lack of sophistication. Not fair. The 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid sedan is pure smarts. It's fresh, refined and above all, very, very normal. It deserves a new hue. Sage is a good variation. It's descriptive and wise at the same time.

More than any other hybrid we've driven, the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid has the most seamless transition between electric motor and gasoline engine. If we didn't tell you it was a hybrid and let you drive it, we doubt you would notice. And unlike Toyota's Prius, which was purposely designed to look special with its little shifter and Alpine cable car-like design, the Camry Hybrid looks almost identical to the non-hybrid Camry. They're driving among us and you don't even know it.

It's definitely a much better hybrid than the Accord. Much better mileage and still decent pep (on par with the old Camry V6).

I noticed that they kept saying the numbers are good but then pale in comparison to the V6 Camry.

I was reading it and thinking to myself, it goes to 60 faster than the regular 4 cylinder, it brakes better/shorter than our 02 Camry XLE 4 cylinder, it gets better mileage so I don't see the problem. It's kinda obvious the V6 will be faster to 60 and will brake better (larger brakes).

The thing is, the Prius and I'm sure the Camry Hybrid too have smaller than normal brakes. Now before you run off sounding the alarm that the cars are underequipped for braking duties, note that most of the braking is done by the electric motor (regenerative braking). The friction brakes are only used to hold the car from creeping forward at a traffic light. If an emergency stop is needed, it shouldn't be a problem cause the brakes will be cool and well, Brake Assist should kick in if needed.

My wife purchased her TCH in june, 2007. There are about 8,500 miles on the car. She was getting between 34-38 mpg. Since Nov. her mileage has dropped off to about 31-33 mpg. I shut down the air conditioning, but I don't think that will help. What might be the cause? Any ideas?

Winter (colder temps, winter fuel). That and tyre pressure dropped too b/c of lower air temperature.

Yep, like Tideland said winter. My ECHO's mileage has dropped off too but pretty much every car is a victim to this. THere are ways to reduce it like a heated garage or engine block heater. My mileage has dropped off to the low 30's as well. I hate winter!!!
