TORRANCE, Calif. — Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. on Tuesday said its U.S. auto sales grew on stronger sales of cars and light trucks across its brands.
The Japan-based automaker said domestic auto sales rose 25 percent to 222,950 units from 178,417 in last year's September for its Toyota and Lexus brands. Toyota-branded sales grew 26.1 percent to 197,250 cars and trucks from 156,381, while Lexus-branded sales rose 16.6 percent to 25,700 units from 22,036.

Car sales across the two brands grew 18.4 percent to 127,367 units, while light truck sales grew 34.9 percent to 95,583 units from 70,866.
Some of the strongest growth was for Toyota's Rav4, up to 11,551 units from 5,743, and Toyota's Tundra pickup, up to 12,609 units from 7,253.
Adjusted for one more selling day in this year's September, total sales across the two brands grew 20.2 percent, with a 21.3 percent gain in Toyota and a 12.1 percent rise for Lexus.
Year-to-date total Toyota sales grew 12.5 percent across the two brands to 1.9 million units, with Toyota sales up 13.3 percent and Lexus sales up 7.2 percent.
Adjusted figures show Toyota sales up 12 percent across the two brands, with Toyota-branded vehicles up 12.8 percent and Lexus up 6.7 percent.
"While crossovers, hybrids and small cars continue to show strength, our SUVs and full-size trucks posted solid gains," said Jim Lentz Toyota Motor Sales executive vice president.
U.S.-listed shares of Toyota Motor Corp. rose 23 cents to $110.73 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
