Japan Toyotas in Danger

I was reading this article about Toyota going to past GM in 07. And the was a comment about Toyota is rowing too fast, and that will lead to there donwfall. I have notice the toyota quality had been going up and down in the past few years. Due to the rapid production of cars and there high demand Toyota is slipping in quality. so sad.. Toyotas car are not bad there still good but the quality is slighty go down. Not on all models. But Toyotas cars are still saying never the less. I just hope that Toyota can do some thing to change this curse. It funny how its a good thing and a bad thing. so what is your opinon???

while the quality may be going up and down, even at the lowest point of quality on a toyota on any model, its still better than the quality of gm and ford.

I agree with you a 100%. You can even say that it's better than most manufacturers, not just gm and ford.

Back to the subject, the Toyota isnt in any danger. They have a strong group of people with brand loyalty. I'm definite that my next car will be a Toyota or Toyota affliated ie Lexus or Scion, maybe even Daihatsu if it was offered in the United States. Toyota has set the standards for other automakers and now its time for everyone else to play catch up. American Automakers didnt see them as a threat until it was too late. The Japanese was able to outsmart Americans with the Japanese Auto Embargo in the 1970s and set the foundation of their attempt to controlling the Auto Market. Now with GM in bankruptcy and looking for a merger and Ford falling into third place, Toyota is only beginning to show its supremacy in the auto sales in the United States.

With their strength, who knows? Maybe Toyota will merge with GM and eventually exploit the GM factories scattered around North America. Only time will tell the rest.

Sorry if what i wrote didnt make sense. I typically do this when I've had a couple of drinks.

Still, despite what has been said here, I would like to see Toyota go back to making high quality cars. I'm not saying they're not doing so now but the gap has shrunken considerably between Toyota and its competitors. Even Toyota admits that and is starting to try other avenues to distinguish itself from its competitors. I realise that cost-cutting is necessary to stay competitive in today's world, however, I hope Toyota can cut cost without sacrificing the quality of materials that they're known to put in their vehicles.

Does anyone remember when Toyota interiors used to look and feel more upscale than they really are? Toyota is good at making cheap things look and feel expensive. However, the new Yaris' dashboard plastic looks and feels cheap. I daresay the Gen 8 Corolla (which falls well into the Yaris price range in Canada) has a dashboard that feels more expensive. Yes, it's plain (especially in with the grey interior) but the soft-touch plastic is much nicer than the hard plastic in the Yaris.

Also, back then, buying a Toyota meant paying for features not found in its class. Our 2000 Corolla LE had illuminated keyhole ring, damped overhead assist grips, fabric-covered centre console box cover, dual-tiered centre console box, adjustable rear headrests, removeable 3-point seatbelt for the rear centre passenger (so that when you fold the seat, the seatbelt doesn't interfere), a rear cupholder and so forth. These may be trivial things today but back in 2000, none of its competitors had those (Protegé, Sentra, Civic, Focus, Neon, etc).

When 2003 came around, they reverted back to the cheap, fixed, hard plastic assist grips reminescent of the Gen 7 Corolla, they removed that illuminated keyhole ring feature and the centre console was covered in vinyl, they removed the seatbelt clip so when you fold the seat, the centre seatbelt will be in the way and so forth. Yes they added quite a bit of other features and lowered the price but the tiny details that they're known for was lost. If I didn't care about small things, I'd buy a Honda.

I'm probably the only one who's picky and points out these 'trivial' things but honestly, that's what sets Toyota apart from the competition in my opinion.

Today, all people care about are "features" and how much they can get for the price. Manufacturers take advantage of that and cut cost that way.

Example? Take my friend's TSX. It has a power moonroof, ABS, HIDs, 17" alloys etc etc. Seems like a good deal at Cdn$34k (back in 2004) and it definitely is. What's the catch?

- The power moonroof is not one-touch operation like my 02 Camry

- The ABS is BASIC. i.e. it's the same one on the Echo Hatchback. It does NOT have EBD like 90% of the ABS systems out there

- The HIDs don't have auto-levelling (or manual for that matter)

- wheel locks cargo net and rear mudguards aren't standard (although dealers tend to throw them in "for free")

- CD player doesn't have a track time

Anyway, that's enough ranting for now. I don't think anyone would read this entire post lol.

TravisAe86,

According to the website that RAV4evr posted on the reliability stats, I wouldn't be too worried about the quality going south in Toyota's case. The facts are overwhelming and I assume Dr. Edward Deming(An American) has a smile from ear to ear knowing that his teachings to Toyota are responsible for the demise of the big 3.

Another Thing is that toyota has delayed new products from launching to make sure that these little quality issues are fixed. Toyota has delayed the new corolla for another year and will not launch until 2008. The also pushed back the new sienna into Jan to make sure that everything is working with that new 3.5 v6

the yaris is a successor to the echo/tercel, so in actuality its a class below the corolla is it not?

I read in the Wall Street Journal that their current ceo realizes what all of you have meantioned. The article was either this week or last week. It addresed his view the toyota should be more efficient-- in all ways. Spoke about thngs like how there was a large engine casting machine that could be reduced in size. How important is that? allows more room in the floor to do other things while going down the line. Another example was some sort of installation where the machine used was large.. the tool was reduced in size so now more than one worker can get into that area to do more things. Another topic is addressed in his effort/plan to become more efficient is to reduce that amount of parts..ie standardizing so that I guess one part can be used in more than one model.

How would that affect total quaility? Well According to that article- and we also know that toyota is expanding rapidly. So by being more efficient and standardizing more things, they can have plants in China or India produce products as close as possible quality as say their japanese plant.... Granted they decently train their people (IMO).

So I'm not too worried. He acknowledges and is adressing the problem.
