toyota trucks have always been relatively pricey. man, it's almost topping 40 grand for a 1/2 ton truck. heck, throw in some options and you've probably busted 40 grand.
If you go on competitors websites and price out a comparable half ton truck, you will find the Tundra's price to be competitive for now. Since package and option prices are not yet available, it's a little hard to compare, but it looks ok to me for now. The problem is not at the retail level, but comes down to incentives, i.e. rebates and low finance rates. We'll just have to wait and see.

Yep the 6.0L top of the line GM is at least $2000 higher with similar equipment. The 5.3L Vortex is in no where near the same class as the 5.7L iFORCE.
Commercially Toyota is going to make GM blink. If GM leaves it's pricing untouched and ignores the Tundra then the value comparisons of the 5.3L and 5.7L will be no contest. As much as I agree with you, I can't see GM doing that. Since their profits made off of their trucks truly is GM's bottom line, I don't think they can afford to cut that profit margin. That said, GM will do well with their new trucks regardless of what Toyota makes, those truck buyers seem to be a very loyal bunch.

The Tundra at 16K didn't exactly make a big difference sales-wise, as it was too small for a lot people anyways. For those that want 1st gen Tundra size and capabilities, they can easily go with a Tacoma. The Tacoma is bigger than any other midsize truck.
The pricing for the new Tundra means less overlap with the Tacoma, and it also means more pricing pressure on American trucks. The 5.7L is only 1K more expensive than the 4.7L option.
I can see what Toyota is doing here. Toyota is purposely putting cut-throat prices on the 5.7L models to saturate the market with 5.7L Tundras, which will do wonders in terms of getting the word out about the Tundra.

Further, the only truck that is close to the 5.7L Tundra powertrain-wise is the Silverado with the 6.0L, but you can't even get that in Regular Cab trim. Also, you'll be hard-pressed to find an Extended Cab Silverado with the 6.0L VortecMax for 28K.
That Regular Cab Tundra 5.7L: $24,380 MSRP will be awesome...

On the same hand, I think you will be hard pressed to find an Access Cab Tundra with the 5.7 for it's base price also. Companies don't tend to make many near base levels. I know because that is what I normally look for when I purchase one. Even with the 06 Tundra, it was hard to find a regular cab that was less than high 18K
I wasn't able to 'build and price' the tundra yesterday, maybe it's up today, but I think I will be able to make a better judgment then.
As far as the regular cabs, they didn't sell well before, but my point is, that if Toyota wanted to companies to buy them for their work trucks, is a company going to be willing to pay $4-5K more for a Toyota compared to something else?
