You forget this is Toyota they have something up their sleves.
If they do make a diesesl im sure it will be green friendly and have the Option to run on Biodiesel which is steadily taking up in popularity.
A small company in Denton Texas Makes this Bio Diesel as has a contract with the city of Denton to run all its diesel trucks on Bio diesel. Now there are several big rig companys near that same biodiesel production factory that are being swayed to run moe biodiesel trucks.

So Toyota moving to diesel wont steer from their plan to switch people to alternative Fuels.
Not to mention that they could in fact create a hybrid diesel engine.
Which if you ask me that would be something to see.

In any case no mater what type of Diesel they bring out its comming out with the pure intention to do one thing. Take on and beat the big 3 so it will have something.

I think the 1VD 4.5l V8 D-4D from the Land Cruiser will not appear in the Tundra. Altrough that engine can be tweaked enough to put out enough power to be competitive, I expect they use a large 4 or 6 cilinder truckdiesel engine from Hino.

I strongly doubt that, a 4 or 6 inline engine would be out of the question, they can`t comply with the emissions standards and they are *not* suited for a car, if you have seen these engines you would understand why..

Hino automotive diesel engines.

J05CTI: 5,3L/I4 187hp@ 2500rpm / 5395lb-ft @ 1500rpm Weight 450kg

J08CTI: 8,0L/I6 259hp@ 2500rpm / 550Lb-ft @ 1500rpm Weight 540kg

The rest of the lineup is not worth mentioning, they are way to heavy and bloated for a car.

I would be very supprised if something else than the new 1VD engine would show up in the Tundra.

if toyota really wants to compete, they're going to need to bring a 3/4 ton with a diesel. i know a lot of people who are just waiting for it to hit. ( not me-i'm fine with the tacoma )

Another option is to increase the 1VD size to more then 5 liter, strap two turbochargers on them and high pressure injectors. That should do it.

And in the meantime the should offer the standard 1VD to the Tacoma.

the twin turbo version of the 1VD was just released for the LC200. It specs at 283hp and 480lb-ft of torque. Not enough to compete with the HD's from Detroit, but should be awesome numbers for a half-ton. With those torque specs and the 6spd auto it could have the same pulling power as the 5.7 (more than any half-ton needs) using just a 3.54 gear. That would deliver really low cruising rpm/decent fuel econ.
