According to Edmunds InsideLine reporting on comments made by a Toyota exec....

Toyota had long been known to be interested in launching a diesel-powered Tundra to compete with highly profitable, heavy-duty versions of Detroit Three pickups, but some sources now suggest Toyota may be reassessing those plans. Nonetheless, Toyota says development of a diesel-powered Tundra is "completed."
Good news; however I agree with the writer that Toyota doesn't want to delve into the diesel market because they want to steer people towards hybrids. I think that would be a major strategic error on their part. I've ridden in a new diesel Jetta & I liked it a lot.

Nice If they have some better build qaulity and few problems with the clean diesel technology, that will be the second vehicle if the other cars on the wishlist don't happen

I think they want to give the consumer another choice. ppl who buy a hybrid is more like using the truck to hual light weight stuff like tools, some parts and stuff like that which takes room...........but with a diesel truck, itz more like for construction ppl who needs to hual a generator/trailer/drywall etc. around the city.........and also diesel truck is not as friendly as gas truck in winter....... although they will start, it will not be as good to the engine, n not many ppl like to wait for 5mins til the engine is complete warm up......
personally, i will buy the diesel truck, as those hybrid need to get their batteries replace after certain milage, which is expansive.......and i believe it will be a turbo diesel ...

That is a big problem among diesel owners that "just don't care". Hell, if you watch you neighbors, they literally start there car and before its finished cranking, have it in reverse to get the hell out of dodge...every day! Then they go run the hell out of it....

Diesel would have to be more powerful than that (assuming this is an HD Tundra) to be competitive. There were some early rumours a long time ago Toyota and Hino were together developing a diesel for an HD Tundra and the rumoured specs were 390HP and 700 lb-ft. We will see soon enough what the real specs will be.
Nice to hear though some official Toyota word that a Tundra diesel is coming.

As I recall, no. The rumour was that Toyota was looking at making a class-leading diesel engine, and the rumoured specs were 390HP/700 lb-ft. Those specs would make for a class-leading HD truck at least in engine power.

Seriously. Considering GM's 6.6L Duramax is outputting 365hp/660lb-ft, Toyota will be looking to besting the Big 3 once again in performance figures.
Dodge's 6.7L Cummins is at 325hp/650lb-ft, while 5.9L HO Cummins is 325hp/610lb-ft.
Ford's 6.5L Powerstroke is at 350hp/650lb-ft, and due for replacement very soon. Ford will likely garner the power crown if Toyota has no answer.
Clearly Toyota will have to produce a large displacement diesel motor to really, seriously compete with the Big 3. 390hp/700lb-ft seems like an attainable target for a class leading HD truck.

Dodge's is rated at 350 hp /650 lb-ft. and the duramax is rated at 365 hp.
I agree with u there, of course I wonder if class leading MPG matters as well.

I fixed Dodge's power ratings. For 2007, the 6.7L diesel was updated to run cleaner, and subsequently puts out less HP due to more stringent emissions laws. I also added the 5hp to the Duramax.
with toyota's technology, I think they can produce the same power as the cummin's, n duramax w/ sth like a 4L V8 turbo diesel........or even a diesel hybrid.........
