Canada Camry Hybrid captures 20 per cent of Camry sales in Canada

Toronto, Ontario - The Toyota Camry gasoline-electric hybrid sedan, which was named 2007 Canadian Car of the Year by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada earlier this year, now accounts for about 20 per cent of all Camrys sold in Canada, announced the company.

"We are thrilled that Canadians have embraced the Camry Hybrid. The Camry Hybrid has accounted for almost 20 per cent of all Canadian Camry line sales in the first seven months of this year," remarked Tony Wearing, Managing Director of Toyota Canada Inc. "As Canadian drivers are discovering, the Camry Hybrid delivers more than just great fuel efficiency and a fraction of the tailpipe emissions of a conventional automobile. It's also big on performance thanks to smooth and powerful hybrid acceleration and Toyota's top of the line vehicle dynamics and control technologies."

The 2008 Camry Hybrid, which is now on sale, has an MSRP of $32,000, up slightly from $31,900 for the 2007 model.

That percentage of sales is a good start

I heard 4/10 Camrys sold in BC was a Camry Hybrid (heard it from rmorrow who got it from somewhere.. newspaper maybe?). Not surprised since I only see LEs and TCHs here. I may see the occasional XLE V6 and LE V6 and SE models.

I tend to see 4-cylinder Camry LEs and SEs here, and do see Camry Hybrids on a regular basis (even daily) here in the Toronto area. There are a noticeable number of TCHs running as taxis in downtown Toronto also. Compare that with Civic Hybrids, which I see only once every 6 months or so. I don't know what Toyota's sales goals for the TCH are, but I would say that they are doing very well.

I drove one during the recent Hybrid Tour, and I have to say that I was impressed. I would very seriously consider a Hybrid (Camry, Highlander, Corolla, ...??) for our next vehicle.

You sure? Just go on Granville and you'll see TCH taxis running up and down. None of the dealers I visit have an XLE V6 in stock lol. It's like you have to order it in.

No one drives a XLE, I don't see the point in it either when you can get most of the features in a LE+package already anyways.
If LE isn't enough then most will go for the SE with the better looks. The XLE is just a LE with some gimmicks, too bland in my book and doesn't differentiate itself from the lower siblings.
The XLE is above the SE in price right? When a fully loaded SE goes over 40k new, there is even less reasons justifying paying for a XLE when for that price, you are ready to move a little more upscale to the next level.

Taxi's are a different story, I believe the taxi companies got huge reimbursements for buying the hybrids, hence the number of them on the road.

I think it's the price. A loaded SE V6 is $36k. The XLE is $37.5k. For 2008, you can basically get what is the equivalent of a 2001 Camry XLE V6 lol.

Just buy an LE (4 or 6 cylinder), get all the factory options (moonroof, power seat, auto-dimming mirror w/compass and for the V6, the stability control) and then add the new-for-2008 dealer-installed factory leather (which includes heated seats) and there you go lol.

The XLE is really filled with small touches that only few will appreciate. Stuff like rear vents, rear sunshade, sliding console armrest, covered rear cupholders, reclining rear seats, dual-zone auto climate control with Plasmacluster ionizer, JBL audio, bluetooth, touch-operated front cupholder lid, dark American woodtrim (replaces the Olivewood of 2007), multi-function display with trip computer, power passenger seat, leather & wood trimmed shift knob and foglights.

For those who just want a car with leather, yeah there's the LE and the leather package (which doesn't include the shifter or wheel I believe, just the seats and doors)

Loaded SE is only $36k? Last time i checked it was $43k after tax. Either ways, its beyond what I can afford. I really considered getting a new Camry for school so mine will retire to my brother or something. Doesn't seem like its gonna happen anytime soon.

The LE package thing is exactly what I mean. Those little touches on the XLE is nice but few will actually appreciate it. I think the only things people will really care about is the sliding center console and the leather wheel.

Does the SE or LE come with auto climate control? its nice, but I don't really need it(maybe I haven't used it and can't appreciate it yet, mom's MB has it, doesn't use it though)

I'm guessing the XLE will be $45k+ after tax. There isn't really anything like it around that price, maybe the Acura TL, and that's it. You can say its the poor man's luxury car, but no matter what kind of luxury options there are, you'll still be driving a Camry. Its not a bad thing, but you don't get the kind of "Oh you drive a MB?" reaction from people.

PS: Does the reclining rear seat mean the rear seat cannot fold down?

Yes....only LE models have 60/40 rear seats (so does Hybrid but the opening is mostly blocked). SE and XLE models have pass-throughs.

Ohh.. my bad, I was talking before taxes lol. But yeah if the XLE is $45k after tax, then the SE is about $1,500-$2,000 less than that (so.. $43k?)

The TL is $41k BEFORE tax so the XLE V6 still has a $3.5k advantage. Yeah.. esp. when you can buy a B200 for $29,9xx (before tax).

Yeah, it only has a pass-through via the centre armrest. Not a bad compromise I think.

Edit:

oh yeah and only the XLE and Hybrid get the dual-zone automatic climate control. I like auto-climate control cause Toyota ones are pretty good. On the Prius, it has a two-tier system which means in the winter, it can use recirculated air to the foot level to help heat up the interior faster and still use fresh air at the head level to keep the windows from fogging up. Pretty smart! It'll also start turning the fan up if it senses the sun shining in and heating the cabin (noticed that by accident when it was on LO and it was cloudy but then the sun started to peek through the clouds and I could hear the climate control slowing turning the fan speed up).

True.. although it's about as useful as a pass-through on the Hybrid. At least the other side folds so you can use the seatback if there's something dirty that you don't want to put on the seat (and doesn't fit on the floor and your trunk's full lol)
