The 2nd gen Highlander hasn't been out long enough to justify it as a failure. 6 months is usually the time it takes for a vehicle to become noticed in the marketplace, unless it's extensively marketed and hyped. People said the same thing of the Tundra when it first came out, and now look. Production is still ramping up. They can't count deposits as sales for the Highlander people are waiting for.

Excellent point! It is also a very different vehicle -- much larger with a different seating configuration (the second-row 2+1 design) -- just as the Tundra was much different from its predecessor earlier this year. So, it may take some time for people to get to know it.

plus the highlander moved upmarket in price as well as size (avalon platform instead of camry) with the rav4 filling in the old highlander's spot. the higher price bracket would naturally explain the lower sales. the rav4 which now occupies the highlander's former spot is doing very well. no worries for toyota there.

SO, toyota expected lower sales of his all new model, ok I got it.

i'm sure toyota was hoping for increased sales or at least the same, but if you move upmarket in size and price, it's not unusual to see a total drop in sales.
Like what 91MR2quickNA said is there are deposits so that doesn't count. Also the Yaris and others are on waiting lists, so they can't make enough, that's why it seems the sales are down, just cause the demand is up and they can't get enough out the door. Pictures don't do justice, I think the Highlander looks arlight in person, more of a presence, even if its not as edgy as the Mazda9.

Honda up 9.4%, driven mostly by the new Accord and CR-V. Who would have thought so many people were waiting on the new Accord. . . . .ugly styling and all.

how much bigger and pricier it is now? Isnt the hybrid and the limited trims that really increased a lot in price?

I didnt know the demand was so high that the waiting list were 2 months plus, cause yaris numbers are down second month in a row, well, toyota with this model is having great times indeed.

I think even the base model increased in price. They have to make way for the RAV4 plus its a newer vechicle that moved up market. It seems every year Toyota nudges prices up on models. Take the Yaris for example since its introduction to the U.S. its gotten price increases, sure its not much but it still adds up

Wow, that's really a bummer for Ford. The thing that really pissed me off about Ford is the Fusion and how they claimed it to be a better car then the Camry or Accord which have been around for a very long time.
