Here's the verdict:
Days ago I took it to the Lexus dealer where I bought it, who in turn sent it to the Toyota dealer. They called me the next day and said that everything checked out fine. THEN they called me ten minutes later and said that the Toyota technicians drove it on the interstate and the car stopped itself for them! They agreed with me that the car is not supposed to stop itself and there definitely was a problem. Over the course of the next three days, Toyota narrowed down the problem to either the ABS module or a defect with the rear brakes.
The man at Lexus told me that the problem became so bad that it had to be towed back from the Toyota dealership. At Lexus, anytime anyone started the car and touched the brake, the left-rear caliper would clamp down on the disc, and it could be released only by bleeding the brake fluid out.
So Lexus felt that the problem was with the caliper, not the ABS module. Because, he said, some of the Lexus technicians have experience with Toyotas, and when the ABS module goes bad, it affects two or four of the brakes, not just one. They replaced the left-rear caliper and the brake line. They test-drove the car for 50 miles and could not duplicate the problem.
Lexus loaned me a car to use while all this was going on, and did not charge me anything. I'm sure if the problem returns, they will make it right. In the meantime, I think I'll just use it in the "regular" mode. I just wish that was the default setting.
Thanks for your response!
