While I usually find Toyotas to be good cars and have owned a few myself, most recently a Yaris hatch that I loved, I rented a Tacoma pickup yesterday and was actually in the car when it malfunctioned.
For those of you who are curious:
- The check engine light does come on
- The traction control light comes on
- The gas pedal drops itself to the floor
- Because the traction control is on, the breaks are largely less powerful than normal (this is the biggest problem I noticed because normally a logical person would just stop the truck)
Here's what I did to stop it:
- Putting the truck into neutral allowed me to slow the car
- The engine continued to rev at max rpms
- Find a good place to ditch the thing and throw it into park, using the ebrake to slow down before that
- Enjoy the smells
It's obviously terrible for the engine to rev at max rpms for any time in neutral so i would suggest not rolling around like "a baller" for any longer than you absolutely have to.
Have you returned the Tacoma? Did you fill out any sort of document or questionnaire? Was there any interest in the events leading up to the malfunction?
While many folks may not believe this vehicle to be a rare find, I would think the information you could provide would make the vehicle an item of interest. Your cool headed response would provide a great deal of credibility for what you experienced.

Drive by wire pedals don't just drop to the floor unless the internal spring failed. The ECU and throttle butterfly have no effect on the actual pedal. It's all electronic.

Clarify please.
I think it's hilarious reading all these reports where the driver says something along the lines "The pedal moved by itself and stuck to the floor" and " I saw it move with my own eyes!!"
That makes it easier to spot the fakers.

That story has come under fire by many as heresay and Toyota themselves debunked that test.

So why the link? This was a set up & rigged to show SUA. ABC has already admitted it made "mistakes" in the reporting of this story. Any car can be shown to do this if it is rewired. I'm all for finding out the truth about SUA but stories like this don't help any at all & only add to the confusion by spreading lies & misconceptions.
