The Toyota model, still to be named, will be sold exclusively in Japan, while the Subaru-badged model will be marketed worldwide.
So, all toyota fans will have to buy a SUBARU model to drive a coupe developed from toyota....mmmmm nice.
And who is the benchmark for this car?
Any guess? no?
Surprisingly, the joint Toyota-Subaru R&D team has chosen the out-of-production, front-wheel-drive Honda Integra Type R as its benchmark, because its styling, performance parameters and dimensions mirror what the development team wants to create.
i am sadened
i wanted a toyota sports car ;_; /cry

220 n.a. hp from a 2.0 boxer, I just have such a hard time believing from any auto maker that we'll see those numbers...besides, I dont think a boxer engine will rev relaibly to 9,000 rpm that would probably be required to make those numbers.
On a sidenote, I think toyota must be boycotting anything sporty in its current line-up. That is the only reason why they won't put their badge on it over here. haha.

Well that sucks balls. But who know how reliable this info is. Maybe it will change by then. Or they will test the Toyota sports coupe in Japan then bring it over. Who knows.

i hope its like the exact one in the picture... and u never know if toyota will bring it over or not cuz scion tC is getting out of date and toyota needs a compact sports car...

Yes possible, but with the boxer platform, it will be difficult, especially as far as lubrication is concerned.

^ Yes I've heard about lubrication problems on the boxers. We'll just have to see. I have a feeling about this though because the boxer is not a weak engine in terms of getting hp figures.
Tideland: I believe reading somewhere at the time of introduction, the ITR was the only consumer consumption car that people could afford that was tuned to be neutral, everything else was tuned to understeer from factory.

yet another thread on something supposed... sorta reminds me of the 2008/2009/2010/2011/2012 supra thread. don't hold your breath. i'm not doubting, but i wouldn't start saving up for one.

I think with Toyota collaboration, it shouldn't be too hard for Subaru to hit 220hp on their engines.
add yamaha's knowledge to the mix, and 220 should be a breeze. i don't think the 220 hp out of two naturally-aspirated liters is the question. that can be easily done and has been done. heck, they toyota/subie/yamaha can design it with good mpg and reliability to boot.

^lubrication problems can be an issue, though i don't see something major as that coming out of a toyota, and i'm sure toyota would like to keep it that way. an electronic mishap is more likely to come about these days, such as the tranny flares in the gen6 camry drivetrains.
and yeah. boxer engines are sweet right out of the box. they've never been anemic from the factory from what i recall, but that's somewhat due to tuning. the two major companies utilizing boxer engiens (porsche and subaru) didn't have uber-high mpg in their mind when creating their boxer engines- even the n/a four-banger in the base impreza.

Hmm.. it's interesting that they're benchmarking a FWD car, although the ITR does handle well.
^i found it interesting too that they're benchmarking the ITR for their RWD 2+2.

^yup. even the lesser integras were totally different machines from the factory. almost every suspension component was highly combed-over. stock suspension was one of the greatest for a fwd car, and some would say it IS the greatest fwd suspension. basically everything nowadays is designed with push-understeer from the factory because it's safer for the general public.

Expected to ride on a 103-inch wheelbase, the 2,866-pound coupes will use a 2+2 seating configuration.
Slated for a late 2011 debut, the coupes are expected to be priced starting just under $20,000.
What this means to you: Good times on the horizon for fans of low-end rear-wheel-drive coupes
^what does it mean to me? another car that can easily be subjected to rice.

Big difference here
the supra was rumor and always was rumor nothing was ever confirmed
Toyota repetedly said it was not going to make another Supra
the supra spyshots turned out to be the Lexus LF-A if im not mistaken
This has been confirmed with a press conference and everything XD
no more need to speculate start saving =P

I don't know about hate, since I do see some thing they're doing better. Disappointed? Yes, when I find the Yaris as Toyota's only current vehicle remotely close to fun only to be beaten by the fantastic Honda Fit...can't say I'm happy about that. If its true that this Subaru/Toyota coupe is going to be badged as a Subaru outside of Japan...it leads me to believe Toyota is just giving up to attract a driver like myself, and rather Mazda do it since I find both the 3 and 6 are fantastic to drive.
