Tundra Engine Gets Supercharger

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/i...a-and-sequoia/

Its not a big article so here is the whole thing.

Quote:
Not widely recognized as a performance parts leader, but rapidly becoming one, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) has revealed a supercharger system for its Tundra and Sequoia pickup and SUV. Featuring the same basic Eaton four-lobe system found in the Cadillac CTS-V and Corvette ZR-1, the new supercharger boosts the company’s 5.7L V8 to 504hp (376kW) and 550lb-ft of torque (742Nm) maximum output.

The supercharger, which Toyota calls the TRD 5.7L 3UR Supercharger System, is a Roots-type unit that can deliver up to 8.5psi while remaining legal for the street and any state’s emissions tests. Toyota also offers a warranty on the system if its installed by a Toyota dealer, either adding a full year of unlimited-mileage coverage for the unit or including it in the remainder of any existing new-car warranty, whichever is longer.

TRD already makes a wide range of superchargers for its other cars and trucks, including the Tacoma and FJ Cruiser, which share a 4.0L V6 engine, and the Scion tC and xB, which share a 2.4L four-cylinder, reports InsideLine. Output for the V6 is increased to 304hp (226kW) while the four-banger is boosted to 200hp (149kW).

GM Performance Parts, Ford Racing and Mopar still sit in front of TRD in the U.S. based on sales volume of performance parts. However, the company has only really been pushing its offerings for a little more than three years now, since TRD came under control of the company’s U.S. operations.
Looks like the Toyota Truck Guys are getting a new toy.
And daaaam thats a nice chunk of power in that truck

Discussion:
My questions
To late to the market?
Will anyone care?
Will anyone buy it?
What will it do to fuel economy?

Bigger question: Can the already suspect drivetrain handle it?

Well, there is no better way to find out than to try it in real-life conditions... and then see how it fares.

Yeah that is a nice chunk of power. Maybe the Tundra can finally out pace the GT-R That would be funny. Humm.

I know Ford is coming out with a Raptor performance truck I believe. So despite gas prices I'm sure there is still a small market for this. now if only they applied it to their cars and not vehicles that aren't selling as well. But on the flip side maybe that's why they are doing it to attract attention to the product.

Ooops!! My mistake. I had forgotten the #1 unwritten rule of posting on this forum; one that I myself had accused others of doing in the past! Please forgive me!

Well, Ford does have their EcoBoost engines coming, and the first such engine is supposed to be a direct-injected 3.5-litre turbo-charged V6 engine for the Lincoln MKS, their new top-of-the-line car based upon the Ford Taurus. The MKS is already out with the 3.7-litre V6. I don't know if the EcoBoost version will replace the 3.7-litre or be a performance version.

The EcoBoost will eventually find its way into Ford's trucks also.

Thanks. I think Toyota has enough power for their cars. Its just they need an actual sporty car. Not a dressed up body kit and call it a day car. I'm guessing and fingers crossed that the next tC will be more competitive performance wise. Also as Sulu mentioned the Corolla XRS should get the new 2.5ltr thats in the 09 RAV4 next spring. Or a variation of that.

well as the name suggest EcoBoost is for economy but I know it delivers performance. I would think the supercharger is more for performance than FE. Of course i know the EcoBoost is a marketing term that I'm sure Ford will whore out cause that is a magical word these days. Eco or anything to do with gas savings or suggest it at least.

the TC and the XD are the only ones that are offered superchargers
not even the XRSs have it offered

and man alot of the 09 xrs guys are going to be pissed if next year does get the 2.5ltr from the rav4

but i hope they do
the xrs should be more beefy than the previus models
its sad

give us one rwd car toyota one
thats all we ask for
1 car thats rwd
at this point i dont care if its sporty
as long as its awl
or true AWD not the half baked awd version in the matrix
