Toyota Takes lead in Clunkers Sales

Japanese sales climb in 'clunkers' program

GM, Ford slip behind Toyota in vehicles sold

David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington -- Japanese automakers have gained significant ground on domestic automakers in the U.S. government's $3 billion "cash for clunkers" program.
General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC saw a dropoff in sales while those of foreign rivals rose in the latest tally of "cash for clunkers" sales, as Toyota Motor Corp. dethroned GM as the top seller.
Toyota has sold 18.9 percent of vehicles purchased through the clunkers program, surpassing GM's 17.6 percent.

through the first two weeks of the program, GM accounted for 18.7 percent of all vehicles sold, ahead of Toyota, which had 17.9 percent as of Aug. 5.
As of Friday morning, dealers had submitted voucher requests for just over $1.5 billion, representing 358,851 vehicle purchases, or about half of the money Congress has allocated.

How ironic. But the most of the buying non-car people will go to Toyota. Why? Cause of that reliable and dependable reputation. obviously that is in question these days but Toyota is riding on that.

Also I'm sure most are just looking for A to B transportation.

I know Ford wasn't far behind. Good for all automakers even if this is superficial surplus of sales.

Whether or not Toyota has sold the most, I'm sure the company could care less because the dealers can't keep enough cars (Corollas & Prius for the most part) on the lot.

So much for GM's vow of holding on to the #1 spot in U.S. sales.

Ummm, wrong. If you look at the results of quality surveys and number of TSBs and recalls as compared to production numbers, Toyota's quality is better than it has ever been.
Toyota did have some quality issues from '02-'05, but those problems are now long gone. People still like to perpetuate the notion that Toyota's quality has slipped, simply as a way to cut Toyota down.

I'd pretty much agree with the physical quality of their vehicles, but the quality of customer service has most definitely gone down from previous years. The head of Toyota recently took the rest of the board to task over that issue.
